I was robbed at gunpoint today

All of that happened in Buenos Aires.
When you say Buenos Aires are you speaking of Capital Federal or throughout the province of Buenos Aires?

This thread makes my skin crawl. Glad to read no one got hurt. I'm probably one of the lucky ones then, I'm always extremely cautios but I suppose in the end it's just luck, wrong place wrong time and all that.

it is a mix of luck, and bless. You do not know how are you going to react in a limit situation, and you are, literally speaking, in the hands of a sick person with a gun in his hands.

Many argentinians tell me that the thieves are quick because they do not want you to remember their faces or the situation to get complicated.

I've only been here a couple of months so far but the more I learn and read - and pick up on first hand - I get the feeling that choice of barrio, thinking about where you are going and when - and quite a few other practical considerations come into play here...

I guess the other issue is how far you are prepared to go in terms of preparedness and countermeasures - legal and illegal - and so on...

Its not something that is an easy one - but like everyone else I'm just glad to know you are okay - the loss of a wallet and money and cards etc is one thing - these can be replaced - the loss of life on the other hand is something you don't even want to think about...

I have a lot of local friends who are *extremely* prepared for situations like this - and I can't really discuss something like this here (for obvious reasons) but I guess there really are two options only - one is to offer no resistance and hope for the best and the other is the much more hardcore option - and I guess the decision on which one the person is to take depends on both the individual and things he or or she is prepared to do if they choose the hardcore option - and if you did decide to prepare for such situations by having something with you you would also need to be mentally/psychologically prepared to use it...

Not sure if this helps or not - just a subject I have been thinking about myself on and off since getting here and hearing various stories of people being robbed and so on...

FWIW thats my two pesos worth I guess...

@Desde2008. Buenos Aires means 30% in Avellaneda, Gran Buenos Aires, and 70% in Capital Federal (San Telmo, Recoleta, Barrio Norte and Palermo)
