Any foriegner who has a DNI doesn't need to "carry" their passport with them at any time, unless they are leaving the country, and perhaps not even then if they are traveling to another Mercosur nation.

I would much rather face the prospect of replacing a lost or stolen DNI (with a quick trip to the nearby Registro) than a lost or stolen passport, which would require a trip to the US Embassy, at a much higher cost, even if the latter is now "easier" than ever.

...I believe, at least for permanent residents. Those with temporary residency might only have one option, but I am not certain exactly where they would have to go to replace a lost or stolen DNI.

Perhaps they would also have to go to migraciones first to get a certificado or constancia of their status, and perhaps that's all they would have to do before recieving a new DNI card by mail, but that still would undoubtedly be easier and cost less than replacing a lost or stolen passport from ANY country.

These kind of checks have always actually happened.

What’s different is them showing it like this on social media.

Back in 2017, I was on a bus coming down from Alta Montaña in Mendoza and migraciones stopped the service and boarded it.

They inspected all passengers and asked for passports from all non-Argentine-looking people.

By this time, I’d been in Argentina for nearly 3 months and was asked how much longer I’d be saying/when I was leaving.

I’m a pastey white British guy for the record, so tick the white European box.

Then back in BA. at the job I got here when I started the residency trámite, before I got the precaria, I wasn’t allowed to be in the office in case migraciones came and checked.

Nobody got any problem with the legal immigrants. Those nationals can keep coming to your door so long they are legally in the country. Do you not understand that?

What is legal at the first place? If you talk about pure legal, there is no conventional 'illegal' in Argentina as for US.
If someone committed a crime, deal with it than massive label.

Someone who enters a country without reporting to the authorities is illegal. Thats what the borders are for. They have to comply with the requirements of the nation they’re going to.

As I understood it, the Argentine constitution guarantees the right for foreign people to emigrate here, so the concept is of an irregular immigrant and not illegal- as I understood it

ICE? ICE? When I were nobbut a lad - knee high to a grasshopper like - ICE was the acronym for In Car Entertainment which usually meant an AM radio cut into the dash. If you were really cool then maybe an 8-track; coolest of the cool, a dash-mounted player for your 45 singles.
