A shop in Palermo called me today to say that payment on a purchase I'd made had been refused by Amex when they submitted the sale voucher.
I never made the purchase and Amex have no record of a payment refusal, also I still have my card. The caller had my name and phone number but the wrong DNI number.
I don't even know if it was really the shop calling, or another kind of scam, although I googled it and it does exist.

This sounds like phishing to me.

They had your name and phome number, but did caller actually have your AmEx card number?

Did they try to "verrify" your card number when they called you?

It would be interesting to konw how thay got your name and phone number in the first place.

It's quite possible the person doing this didn't even know that you actually have an AmEx card.

That's why it's called phishing.

I googled the store, and the name and phone number were correct, it does really exist, so I called back to check it was the store who really called me. It was. The sale was for clothing, only about 30 dollars. When I asked for the card number on the slip, they asked for mine and I refused to give it so they asked for a fax number to fax me the slip but I don't have a fax. They asked me to deal direct with Amex, I will call local Amex tomorrow about it. I might try and get them to fax it to my lawyers...

Amex Argentina won't speak to me as it's not my card, even though my identity has been stolen. So many problems here...

That's why they don't send replacement credit and debit cards to Argentina, if yours gets stolen

And I had mine sent even to Serbia several years ago

Wait - I'm puzzled. How was your identity stolen? If they don't have your DNI number and it doesn't sound like they have your Amex number - is it possible it's just someone else with the same name who had a payment declines and they just looked up your name & called you?

Citygirl, the shop said the person wrote down my number. Also I have a foreign name which is too unusual for that to be the case...

As a former amex employee let me tell you, Amex argentina can't talk to you about fraud problems cause they don't have any access to you info... It's not an Argentinean thing, it's internationally. In fact, 3 weeks ago I was in Miami and I had a fraud situation with my arg. issued amex card and I had to call amex argentina since amex US couldn't fix the problem. It can only be fixed by calling the country were your card was issued.

So you have 2 options:
a. call the 1-800 number in the back of you card (you can use skype to call from free) or just call from any phone (you'll be charged of course)
b. go to the amex office (arenales 707) tell them the situation and they'll probably call amex in the States themselves

Also, yes, you can get an amex replacement in Argentina. But you'll have to call a US representative to get it embossed here and you have to pick it up at the Amex bank in Arenales 707...

Let me know if I can help you in any othet way....

They will also DHL the replacement from the US to here no problems. Got an Amex card replaced a couple of months ago from the US, arrived in two days to the door via DHL.
