The word nigger is used in a friendly / funny way among African Americans in the US as well. Also, I referred to the word Negro, not the adjective (...) I for one do not feel that any local company should spend a minute thinking about offensive words in a foreign language, from a market they do not even participate into. I have never ever in 40 years heard an Argentine say the word Nigger while speaking in Spanish ( except for maybe some teenager while watching a movie repeating foreign insults )

In the first week I was in Argentina, six years ago, a well educated Argentine who worked for the Cancillería cautioned me to watch myself in Retiro because it was "Full of niggers." Not really believing what I was hearing I asked, "You mean there are black people?" His response left no room for doubt that he understood the meaning of that word, "Not black like in the US, here we have indians from paraguay and bolivia but they're like your niggers, stupid and violent".

He was speaking English, in Spanish he would have probably used the word "Negro", and while this was the only time I asked for a full explanation it was not even close to the last time I heard the word in a similar context.

I've never once believed the people, including those on this forum, who swear up and down that "negro" is a harmless non-racist term. I don't live in a bubble; I hear it being used on a daily basis and although ocassionly used in the friendly joking context, more often than not it's impossible to ignore the subtext. To me that is offensive and gross, and will immediately sour my mood and my opinion of the person I'm talking to.
