Fruit in the verduleria and meat in the carniceria is still better quality and cheaper than most UK supermarkets.

If you can avoid supermarkets, together with packaged and processed goods as much as possible it keeps the bills down.

I don't know about the UK but comparing to the US thats only half true. Carne is still much cheaper and for the most part more delicious but the vegetable selection in supermarkets destroys the meager wilted offerings from the verdularieas.
