Is the USA going to invade Venezuela

Well I actually live in Venezuela and I'm wondering about what station you're talking about that was shut down in May this year. I never stated there was full press freedom in Venezuela. I watch Globovisión (anti-Cávez channel) on a daily basis, I read the two most important opposition daylies (El Nacional and El Universal).

Although the government is trying to crack down on anti-Chávez media:
Unlike in México and Colombia, here reporters don't get murdered. The majority of radio AND television stations here are privately owned and decide their own editorial line.

I have a question for you Reemster. Is there less poverty in Venezuela since Chavez has been in Power? And how are general living conditions there?

I look forward to your reply

According to most research, poverty has declined about 8% over the last 10 years. There is now more income equality in Venezuela than ten years ago , the number of children enrolled in schoolprogrammes has doubled and The different misiones (government funded special programmes aimed at improving access to education, healthcare and envirmonmental problems) have had varied levels of success.

In general I find the results dissapointing. Not just because I don't believe in socialism (like the majority of Venezuelans), but more because I think Chávez could've achieved so much more with a more moderate policy (on which ground he was voted into office in '98). With windfall oil-profits he shouldve invested more in infrastructure, structural poverty relief (not ad-hoc misiones) and safety.

Then again: there is no viable alternative for Chávez at the moment. Not for one minute I'd think about voting for the opposition politicians that were involved in the '02 coup.

In the next few days I'll post some interesting articles from different sources (opposition AND government) to shed some light on Venezuela in 2009.

Really - you find Venezuela a free and democratic society? I have to say my experiences there were VERY different and I didn't find it a comfortable place to be nor did I find it a happy and satisfied population.

USA might invade Venezuela soon and Obama the new president is continuing his lack of democracy in the region. Argentina is very worried about this development.

You wrote "Argentina", but I think you meant to write "The Kirchners". If Chavez loses power, they are going to lose MILLIONS in potential pay-offs.

Que Triste!!!

Awww, come on, Obama is not gonna invade anybody.... on top of that we are out of money, out of troops, the War Monger - Bush - is gone and the Empire is exhausted...... I think Chavez is super entertaining - a very funny guy....

Not to defend Chavez- but there is NO chance the USA will invade.
Unless Chavez secretly gets a Korean nuclear missile, and points it at Florida.
Then, all bets are off.

Chavez needs the USA to denounce him to consolidate his power. He's a worthless putz who is destroying his country, but as long as the USA gets all huffy, he can keep his base. But if there's no response to his sword rattling, his people will start looking at the country going to crap and then the bigger problems will begin.
