It's Time the World Woke Up and Noticed the Argentine Miracle

“Perhaps because subsidies, controls and protectionism have turned it into a basket-case, it was ready to try the alternative”

Didn’t realise any of these things had ceased

I have noticed how expensive imported products are here. The same products from places like France (cheese, jam etc) cost MUCH less (even half the price) in the US. Why is this? I thought the market was open now?

It's a great article for truthiness, isn't it? As you read it you can play 'spot the massaged statistic' and 'spot the alternative facts' both at the same time but as it is an opinion piece the bar for veracity seems to be set that much lower. I wonder whether the editor put his head round the door and said something like 'You don't look very busy right now, Matthew, I want 1500 words about Argentina before copy deadline' and whether Matthew then launched his office version of ChatGPT and failed to check the results afterwards? Still, if they print 'em, someone on BAExpats is bound to post 'em and this time it might as well be me.

Its amazing how the right-wing English-language press praise Milei’s reforms with the massaged statistics.

On paper, to someone thousands of miles away who’s unaware of the realities and complexities of Argentina, it looks great. They have no idea what it’s like on the ground and how these figures are being “achieved”.

I wish they would interview people in the middle class and ask them if they are better off now with Milei. Wages have not kept pace with the changes. For many in the middle class, those falling rents are not necessarily good since many people live in part from rental income. Basic necessities including food, transportation, and utilities are much more expensive relative to wages than they were before. For me the jury is still out on- I hated the kirchneristas, and perhaps the people are now paying the bill due from all of those years of corruption and overspending….but it is still tough to see what is happening.

60% poverty?
Seems not only “right wing news” sources like to use “massaged” statistics to sell their cause.
(It ain't only a river in Egypt, Antipodean) Argentina's poverty rate is currently estimated to be around 52-57% of the population, with some reports indicating it may be even higher. This translates to roughly 25 million people living below the poverty line. Recent data from the INDEC national statistics bureau indicates a significant increase in poverty, with the rate reaching 52.9% in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023.
