I just landed yesterday from California. After reading The Four Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss I made an impulsive decision and cleared my schedule, packed a suitcase and am planning on spending a month (or more) in Argentina. Any recommendations on must do activities while in BA? I have a guidebook and it is full of interesting suggestions. I thought I would put it out there to the group of things that "can't be missed". Any suggestions are welcome and much appreciated.

Thanks in advance~

Hello Keith and welcome!

You could start off with knowing Buenos Aires downtown and its surrounding. We have a recent thread about that. Also, don't miss one of our Expats Event held regularly (usually Wednesday chats in the afternoon) where you can catch up with some other expats.

If you have any special interests (sports, arts, etc.), tell us about it and somebody will come up with spot on suggestions.

The basic areas to see on a trip are: El Caminito in La Boa (old Italian Genovese neighborhood with colorful houses where perform tango in the street and sell artwork), the antique market in Plaza Dorrego in San Telmo neighborhood, the street fair in Plaza Serrano in Palermo Soho (big night life), Cafe Tortoni en the downtown area called microcentro (tango shoes and antique cafe), Cafe Ideal in microcentro (where they filmed Evita and many other movies, Puerto Madero (a modern upscale neighborhood on the river), and I can't think of anything else at the moment. But it's a start.

I think it depends on what you like.
For instance, I would have a completely different list than the one niaruccia posted.
About the only thing I recommend on her list to my friends is the antique market.

But I have had friends visit who only came to dance tango, while others only want to hear jazz. Some people come wanting to hit every new fusion style restaurant, others want to buy shoes, others to see antique autos, or to visit an estancia and ride horses, others want to dance all night and pick up some strange.

Your tastes will not doubt affect what you want to see.
History, fashion, art, music, food, books, musuems, dance, and partying are the usual suspects, but there is a lot more here in many different categories.

Whadda Like?
