Hi everyone — American here, been in BA a little over a year now. I still hold a green card from an old family petition and I'm trying to figure out how much time outside the US is actually safe. Everyone says "six months" but nobody gives the same answer twice.

For those who've kept a green card while living abroad long-term: how much time do you really spend in the US per year, have you ever been questioned at immigration about it, and was the re-entry permit worth the hassle? Curious about real experiences rather than just the official rules. Thanks!

If you're American in a legal, citizen sense, you have a passport -- why would you have a green card and need to keep it active then?
