Hi everybody,

Anyone know their way around restaurants in Buenos Aires? I do not mean good food, I am thinking more like, how and where do they post about job openings? I have seen very few on craigslist and zero on here. By the restaurants and bars that have been recommended to me by other foreigners, I can tell that there is a large market for restaurants who employ fluent English speakers. Maybe the problem is that there are ton of Yanquis ready, willing and able to fill those positions!

I would appreciate any and all advice!

Best,

Shannon

Are you a resident? There are a ton of fluent english speaking argentines waiting for those jobs as well. No restaurant is going to sponsor you for a work visa to wait tables just because you can speak english. I've never been to a highend restaurant here where the entire staff did not have impeccable english even though none were native speakers. That said, I have been to some bars (that serve food) that had hired foreigners and were paying them illegally.

I don't believe I am more qualified than english speaking Argentines because I am a native english speaker, and I am not so naive to think that a restaurant would sponsor me for a work visa "to wait tables just because can speak english". That said, there is still the cold hard fact that businesses purposely hire foreigners because they can pay them illegally. There is also the fact that it is not uncommon here for job postings to specifically request a "native" speaker of [insert language here]. Hell, a lot of job applications here require a personal photo.

As for me, I have a lot of restaurant experience, I am fluent in english and spanish, and I thought I would see if anyone here had any ideas. I am not trying to budge any english speaking argentines in the "waiting line for jobs". To most businesses I am not a desirable candidate. There are cases in which someone may want to hire me, maybe the boss is looking to employ a foreigner for tax reasons, or maybe he liked my personal photo better.

These jobs usually are not advertised. You might want to go to a few restaurants and as one of the waiters or better managers, then leave a resume.
