Mercardolibre Vs Ebay

That's the point David.
It is a pain NOT to get the cash in hand.
ML are making a lot of money out of MP and have cynically changed the rules to suit only themselves.
As far as I'm concerned, it goes against fair business practice to insist that vendors accept MP with little or no choice in the matter.
I've been using ML since 2006 very successfully, but I resent having my hands tied.

Free listings (no listing fee / no final value fee) do not require MP. For all the others, yes MP is offered as a default option (but you can also offer to get paid by cash or bank transfer). For the non-free options, what you cannot do is not offer MP as an option -- I actually dont know why this is so but I know the MP VP, so I will ask him next week about that ...

I think the issue is not ML, but the Argentinian "side services" to this. One for all, the payments method. With credit cards being a thing for a limited circle of people, and banks setting low spending amount on them, I can hardly see them integrating in the daily purchase of Argentinians.
Combined this with the terrible postal service, the scam tendency of the population...and bam! You have a bust.

In Italy we have eBay, but it has a huge scam risk as well as high rates of items "stolen/lost" by the postal service. Also, mailing stuff in Italy is very expensive, and the cheaper option doesn't guarantee the delivery. In the US the mailing fees are so cheap that hardly weight on the total amount spent when making an online purchase (and most sellers offer free shipping).

I bought twice on ML, and always in person. It is just faster than buying online.

And I have been scammed by PayPal in Italy, when I sold and shipped an item, and after two months PayPal withdrew the amount from my account because they found out it was paid with a stolen credit card. My item was already in Canada, of course. So I ended with no money and my item gone.

Wongjoh, are you saying that an item listed with no publication fee (100% of my listings) is NOT obliged to use Mercadopago?
IE can that option be unchecked/unticked?
That would be news to me.
Cheers

I was referring to the totally free listings (which not only don't have a listing fee, but also don't have a final value fee or % commission off sale). But I think one gets 2-3 of such free listings per year or something like that. Most non-listing-fee listings do have a % commission off sale and for those you can't uncheck MercadoPago (again, let me ask the MP folks why that is the case when I go back into the office this week)

Quick update -- couldn't connect with MP VP (travel conflicts so far) but spoke to the MercadoLibre product manager about requiring MP. His answer was a very swift -- it's "because buyers want the option to pay with credit card". It's also because MELI is assured when a payment has been made and can thus referee whenever there is an issue or a fake sale (to build reputation). There is no additional % commission for using MP (included in the MercadoLibre fees) so there really should not be any downside for sellers.
