Hey all, pareja and I have the 90 day mark coming up-- thinking of going to Montevideo on the Buquebus and making a weekend of it. Anyone know anything interesting to do there? What's the town like? We've been to Colonia and want to do something new.

(Also wondering if first class is worth it on the BB to Montevideo-- if we want to splurge what do we get for the extra 300 pesos?)

First class gets you seats that are separate from the rest. That makes it more private and more quiet. You get a special waiting area at the Buquebus terminal, then you can board directly from there. You get a glass of champagne as soon as you enter first class. Food gets served and taken to you, instead of having to stand in line to get it. It's totally worth the price for the short hop to Colonia. It definitely will be something you want to do for a 3 hour trip. You won't regret it. Price difference is also surprisingly small.

I have only travelled in the economy section and I thought it was perfectly OK. As for Montevideo itself I recommend checking out Teatro Solis to see if anything is on. I also recommend a visit to the restaurant Tandory (which you'll find listed on Trip Advisor). The food and service were excellent. It is expensive by South American standards but it is about one third of the price one would pay in Australia or the UK.

Don't miss the Museo del Carnaval, just a short distance from the ferry port, and the Mercado del Puerto for lunch. Great deco architecture just outside the Ciudad Vieja. A bunch of good wineries just outside town, but I recommend Bouza for its Albariño, restaurant, and an amazing collection of cachilas (antique automobiles). There's also an excellent collection of cachilas at the Museo del Automóvil downtown. I have coverage of these in my iPhone/iPad app to Argentina (https://itunes.apple.com/app/argentina-travel-adventures/id487452504?mt=8), which is also available in Android version (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sutromedia.android.guide.argentina.guide758&hl=en_GB)

There is a wine-themed hotel in My Suites in the Pocitos district: http://www.mysuites.com.uy/?lang=en
