Hi,

My husband is originally from Argentina and I'm Puerto Rican. He has lived in Puerto Rico for the las 25 years and now we're selling our home here and moving to San Rafael, Mendoza. We need to figure out how to wire the proceeds from our house sale from our bank in the US to Argentina so that we can buy a property there. I've read all sorts of contradicting information. If my husband and I open an account in dollars in Argentina, can we wire a large amount of dollars (proceeds from our home sale)? Also, if we travel with more than $10,000 and declare it, do we have to pay taxes or anything at the airport? Any experiences you can share will be so helpful!

Thank you!

I should add that our bank in the US needs us to be there in person to do the wire transfer, is that the same with all US banks?

There are lots of banks that offer online wire transfer capability. Chase Bank, Charles Schwab bank for example.

To buy an apartment in 2016 I had to open an account in dollars in an Argentine bank with the SAME IDENTICAL TITLE as the foreign bank account sending the money. They were called mirror accounts, cuentas espejo.

But local banking regulations are as changing as the winds and the weather. Check with the Foreign transactions desk of your Arg. bank.

Thank you!

My bank considers an international wire transfer a "contract" thereby needing the account owner to be present. I'll have to check with other banks.
