"must See" Art Shows In Buenos Aires In 2017

The advance publicity here, even for big museums, is minimal.
Right now, the 2 shows at Malba are well worth seeing- the survey of brazilian art, and the corresponding show of brazilian and argentine art from the collection.
The show of French women artists at Macba is interesting.
Mamba is always worth a visit.
I regularly hit Proa, CC Recoleta, CC Borges.
Proa is bringing a Yves Klein retrospective in March- that should be good.
Muntref has been doing interesting shows at the Museo de immigracion.

They just took down a couple of interesting shows at Bellas Artes, and havent announced yet what will be going up in February or March, the beginning of the new cycle.

My friends Grupo Bondi are having a show of their industrial design, art, and ideas at Museo Artes Decorativos in November- I think it may be the first solo show like that they have done. It will be great.

For private galleries, its the doldrums right now, shows will pick up in the fall, peaking around ArteBa in June.
I recommend SlyZmud, Ruth Benzicar, Nora Fisch, and Gachi Prieto, in Villa Crespo, Barra in La Boca, Elsi de Rio in Hollywood.

Gallery Night will begin again in a few months-

I check Ramona for whats going on-

its especially good for open studios, pop-ups, and small spaces.

again- not much happening now, but it will begin to happen again in march or so.

I want to see the Picasso show at the Museum of Modern Art in BA.
It's in San Telmo. The exhibit runs through Feb. 28.

arteBA is an annual art fair that is held at the La Rural exhibition center in Palermo. This year the dates are 24 - 27 May.

I've visited many contemporary art museums. IMO the Palais de Glace on Posadas in Recoleta is one of the best. All of the works are by local artists.. Admission i,s FREE

Palais de Glace is a great space.
But the shows vary, depending on the curators.
For example, the current show has artists from the USA, Peru, Brazil, Spain, and other countries.

Usually in November/December, Palais has survey shows of current Argentine contemporary art- one may be crafts, another painting, and so on.

A few other places to check out- Museo Fortebat, which has a wacky permanent collection, with masterpieces interspersed with multiple portraits of the founder...
there is a Brian Eno show of installations up right now at CCK http://www.cck.gob.a...-brian-eno_1348

there is usually interesting work at CC Haroldo Conti, along with their excellent film series.
several shows up there right now.

And, right next door, if you havent seen it- not exactly art- in fact, its emotional, horrifying, and educational- but essential nonetheless- the Museum at ESMA, the torture site from the dictatorship. Its really worth seeing, a very well presented history.

Ries, I'm afraid I have to respectively disagree with you on a couple of exhibits.

Fortabat has maybe 3 or 4 founder portraits (one by Warhole) and I believe all of them are in the beginning of the exhibit. Most of the rest of the art are classic Argentine art. I think a great collection, perhaps the best in Buenos Aires.

And, if you need a nap, go see Brian Eno. This old fart thought it is a complete bust. As is most of the rest of the exhibits at CCK. But contemporary art is way over my head :=) I did see a wonderful jazz concert in the blue whale.

Its Ok, tom.
I didnt say fortebat was bad- I said "masterpieces". but I dont think they change the exhibition much.
and I have not seen the Eno show yet, so I have no idea if I like it or not.

I did go see the show at Palais de Glace today-
downstairs, a kind of ho-hum show of the winners of national prizes for the last 15 years, paintings and sculpture.
but, upstairs, a very interesting show of international artists, curated by a curator from the Tate modern, in London. And they have opened up the skylights a lot more, so you can see the magnificent dome of the Palais much better- it still needs work, but its better.

I also went to see the show at the CC Recoleta, and I like it a lot- its based on Borges quotes about fantasy and imagination, and its a group show of Argentine artists doing literally "fantastic" stuff. There is a huge video dinosaur in the dark, some Gyula Kosice light and water pieces and an installation by Eduardo Basualdo that blew me away- its a lake, that fills with water, and then drains, in about a fifteen minute cycle.
There are also paintings, sculptures, and videos in this show. Very unusual, I would put it in my "must see" list.

CC Recoleta is also always free.

They never change "the Masterpieces" but that's okay, they really are "masterpieces". They do change the upstairs galleries fairly often. The last exhibition was 2 floors of Marcia Schwartz which was great. Don't know if it's still there.

I add museo sivori in palermo, at rosedal; if you visit Caminito, right there is museo quinquela martin and few meters away fundacion proa, its terrace offers one of the best views of town.

I dont recommend to attend arteba.

I am curious why you dont recommend ArteBa.
It is an art fair, and, like all art fairs, is commercially oriented.
But there are all the good Buenos Aires Galleries represented, along with, usually, a good selection of foreign ones- I have seen great work there at booths from Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Mexico, and even Germany and Switzerland.
And the barrio joven, which is subsidized booths for schools, artist groups, and popups, is always interesting.
I once saw Museo De Hippie there, for example.

I just went to the artfair in Punta- and it was worth going to, even though there were only 20 galleries.
Art Fairs are always a mix of boring, interesting, commercial, and weird.
ArteBa is no different.
and the people watching is great, especially if you can get into the VIP preview, with its free champagne.
a LOT of local artists attend, I have met and talked to artists there who, otherwise, dont come out of their studios much.
