Hello,

I have a few question will be visiting Argentina in December, and i am getting married to my long time love, She wants to go to Paraguay to get married which is fine by me, but I have a few questions?

1) Once we get married does she need to obtain a visa n order to come back to America after marrying a U.S. Citizen ( I feel she does) !!!

2) Can you let me know how this procedure is done; Do we have to go obtain it at the American Consulate?

3) How long does it take to obtain if she needs to obtain Visa?

4) How much will all of this cost ? ( If anyone knows )

Finally please help me with any information you can , Whom I need to call , reach out to on her end etc..

Thanks kindly for the replies

- Americans need a visa to go to Paraguay, FYI. http://www.mre.gov.p...o/embaparusa/26

- What visa does she have now? If it's a tourist visa and she's wanting to return to the U.S. to live, she cannot return to the U.S. on a tourist visa and get permanent residency. In every case I've heard of, the person has had to return to her/his country to complete the process at a U.S. consulate.

- The procedure is complicated, and it takes several weeks. Start here: http://travel.state....ily/fiance.html (or with one of the links above)

- The visa itself costs $265 USD - http://travel.state....a-services.html

- Google is your best friend. :)

Me-think that an Argentine marrying in Paraguay to a US citizen and wanting to then emigrate to the US sounds like the most complicate way to do things.

My suggestion is: apply for a US fiancé visa (she will be able to enter the US and get married within 3 months and then stay there legally while she waits for her US perm. res. (AoS)), before entering the US celebrate a religious ceremony in Paraguay just to make her (and her family) happy [remember to sort out your visa to enter Paraguay], get a civil ceremony in the US.

Good luck!

The process of getting a visa for the US as a husband/wife takes a year + generally speaking, not several weeks. Or at least that has been the experience of everyone I know who has moved back to the US with their Argentine spouse.

ETA - OP, start reading here the state dept website for info. I believe you have to do the process in the country where you get married. If your soon to be spouse is Argentine, you are far better served getting married in Argentina in terms of doing the paperwork, not Paraguay.

There are so many variables: the specific consulate where you apply, the nationality of your spouse, etc.
Fiancé VISA (K-1) are much faster than those for spouses (IR1 or CR1). Usually on Immihelp they have up to date feedback from real people.

That's why I said "generally speaking" ;) as I know it's variable. But almost all my "mixed marriage" Arg/US friends have moved back to the US and of the 7+ I can think of off the top of my head, none has taken less than a year to go through the process and many were far longer.

Just pointing out that it's a long process if the OP gets married and then applies for the visa, not something that can be done in weeks or even a few months.

I knew lower numbers for Italian wives, on the order of 6 months. One plus year looks an awful lot of time!
