Need to buy rountrip ticket as tourist?

Hi all,

Does anyone know whether you have to buy a round trip plane ticket to enter as an American tourist? Do you need to provide proof of how you will leave the country upon entry or at any point during the visa process?

I am planning to study for two years in Buenos Aires and need to enter on a tourist visa and change to a student visa once there.
