Hi there -- I'm in Canada at the moment, I need to get some new glasses made up. Can anyone help me with a few of the following questions:

Is it worth my while to buy frames while in Canada and just get the lenses put in when I get back? (I'm between a couple of frames, one for about $175 (cad) + taxes, another for $350 but will probably go for the cheaper option. Don't know what sort of prices I'm looking at in BA.

I'm HIGHLY myopic, so need an optician that can really do a good job of making the glasses -- any recommends? I need someone who really knows what they're doing, this isn't any old -4 optics lens....

I've got OSDE 210 -- I assume they'll cover at least part of the lenses, and then if I want anything done beyond the basics I guess I put in myself? Would be nice to hear from someone their experience (especially someone with the good old coke bottles like me, -10.50 and -11.75)

They also changed my contact lenses, not sure if they are available down there, hopefully someone can let me know: Ciba Vision Dailies Total 1?

Thanks

I have a very good Swiss medical plan and ended up giving up on my glasses being paid through it. They will take care of the contacts with fairly no trouble though. If you're looking at nice frames, I paid a bit over 2,000 for a frame that would run about $275- $300 US maybe? That was after a 20% discount for the Swiss medical card The lenses were very cheap. The frame for people making pesos is a lot more expensive. For Blue pesos, it's just about the same price, however you have a lot more options being there. I suggest you buy the frame you want and let your medical plan pay for the lenses or just pay for them at a discount. I'm guessing their offer is for standard frames and they don't have a system in place for people who would pay extra for a better one. I would not take my chances if I were you..

My Thrifty recommendation given to some European friends.... Go to Once an choose a street fake pair of Nike or Armani glasses frames or other for $50 pesos and go here to any optician to mount your lenses or have him copy your lenses for perhaps $100 and some pesos and get a spare pair of glasses...!!

LOL Rich One I don't think you understand my lenses, they really aren't run of the mill reading glasses, they are extremely difficult to make, they run around 3000 dollars just for the lenses in Canada, not the frames. It's not a job that just any optician can do, certainly not one of those glasses in one hour places! jaja good for a laugh though

She said she needs a good optician because she has very specific needs. A pair of glasses bought from some street vendor might work for sunglasses if you want to go that way. It's not the case if her glasses need a specific type of work. She can get a frame in Canada, then come here and go to a reputable place. My optician was very professional and they have a lab that works very well, they are very professional. They also have different locations throughout the city.

About the contact lenses I get 6.0 torics with no difficulty. I don't know about what you need. Would you like me to ask them? I'm going there anyway later this week or Monday at the latest.

Oh by the way another question, can i bring my prescription from my doctor Canada and have them use that? My corneal specialist here has given me a specific correction and I don't know that I'll be able to get an opthamologist there to agree... I'm going to be in the market for a new dr down there I suspect as I after seeing the top guy here I don't think that my guy in BA is at all on the same page.

International Guy -- that would be great -- not at home right now but will send you the info on the contacts later, thanks so much!

Can recommend:

Dr CHRISTIAN DODDS
Arenales 1611 Piso 4
Capital Federal
Buenos Aires
Argentina
(54) 11-4812-0151
Ophthalmology

English is impeccable. Maybe try and contact and tell him of your dilemma.

Normal lenses are much cheaper in Argentina.
BUT- if you need progressive bifocals or trifocals, those are quite expensive.

I have heard that there is only one company in Argentina that has the equipment to do the no-line progressives. Another source told me they were outsourcing them to Brazil. Not sure which is true.

So if you dont need progressive lenses, you can get them made cheaply here, but if you do, you are better off having em done in El Norte.
