It looks like tomorrow, the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, which we have all loved so much, will be relaunched as the Agencia Nacional de Migraciones.

As always, I can only speak for myself, and I would like to be placed near the top of the list (if there are enough of us to make one) of all of us who "have loved the Dirección Nacional de Migrciones so much."

Even though I applied for and renewed my temporary residency (as well as applied for permanent residency) back in the "bad old days" when no advance turnos were given, and (sometimes multiple) in person trips to Retiro were necessary to secure the initial precaria, the prórrogas to "extend/renew" each year, as well as the cambio de categoría to permanent residency, I loved the way I was treated by the staff at the DMV...each and every time...without the slightest exception, especially since they never said NO and granted everything that I ever asked for.

In the 4 years or so we have been dealing with migraciones, we have seen a marked increase in number of applicants (russians and Ukranians?) and a more harried atmosphere, due to Milei layoffs.
But the individual employees have been great.

Announced and reported in 5he B.A. Times this afternoon:

I didn't get any impression that tourists who entered the country "legally" and have only overstayed their 90 day "visas" are suddenly going to be targets of the new force. There was no mention of this heinous act in the article.

If i understand correctly, an overstay is not a crime, and that a crime is actually commited after a deportation order has not been complied with. Still, even if that's the case, I wonder how high on the priority list will tourists with overstays ever find themselves.

PS: as the new force will be stationed at the border entry points, it's goiing to be more likely than ever that expats with previous overstays will get closer scrutiny when they try to enter. The new force may not share the generally afable attitude of the old one.
