New Year's Without Firecrackers

I'm not much of a fireworks fan but, last night in Puerto Varas, I did walk out to the lakefront to see the midnight display. It didn't do much for me, but after reading this morning's Buenos Aires emergency room statistics in Perfil, I thought it remarkable that I didn't hear a single firecracker here last night.

I am down here in Mar Del Plata... I am also not a fireworks person... since I am not 15 anymore... I loved fireworks when i was a kid and legal.... california is very anti-fireworks now due to the risk of fires and injuries.....

but it was nice down here went to the top of my building with all the others from the building and watched for about 30 minutes fireworks all along the ocean and drank some good wine.. it was much nicer than i expected....cheers and Happy New Year to all!!!

It's a nice place, but a long drive from Calafate. I would choose March, after the high season has ended.

I have some earplugs that I use when I'm operating power tools. This year I put those on for a couple hours around midnight, and just sat back and smiled. Most relaxed New Years I've had in a while.

I did something similar, though I am in Vicente Lopez and everyone was shooting them off. My son and I watched the show on our terrace until about 12:30...he scooted off to bed afterwards, while I watched a movie with earbuds in. When I took them out to step into the kitchen or whatever, my neighbors were still in top party, firecracker form. The hallway next to our home was full of people, but as long as I had my movie going (and a fan's background noise), all was peaceful.

It's a nice place, but a long drive from Calafate. I would choose March, after the high season has ended.

March is indeed the best time. Still sunny and mild with little rain but without the many tourists and without the annoying tabanos (big black and orange horseflies that will hunt you outside the city mostly near water). If you are in Puerto Varas don't forget to try kuchen (cake) or torta at Café Mamusia or Café Danés - they are delicious.
