This had been pending for some time (http://tinyurl.com/k6j8h2k), and it's really good news for both countries. Australia and Canada would do well to follow suit, as would Argentina (but I don't expect the US to lift the visa requirement for Argentines any time soon, unfortunately). The oddball country here is Albania.

Chileans will be subject to a US$14 fee for registering online before traveling to the US, and I expect US citizens will still have to pay that at Santiago. Still, it's a major step forward.

The $ 14 dollar fee is the ESTA fee which has to be paid by all citizens from visa waiver countries Has to be paid every two yeras

As of May 2014 Chilean citizens don't require Visa to travel to the USA

What a blow for the super ego...!!

Starting next May, Chileans don't need a visa to enter the United States, according to an announcement made this afternoon by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and various media in neighboring Chile. Thus, Chile will enter a selected list of 37 countries whose citizens have free access to the United States, a list that so far includes no Latin American country.

Good news. Chile is a responsible country. A friend in the US referred to Argentina as "a rogue country". Sadly true.

Has anyone heard anything about the Brazil fee? With the world cup and olympics going there I would think the fees might be worked out.

Brazil requires a visa, which is something else entirely - even worse than Argentina's retaliation fee, it requires a personal appearance at a Brazilian consulate and other supporting documentation (in fairness, exactly what the US requires of Brazilians and most other foreigners). I would not hold my breath waiting for a change, though I think Brazil is a likelier candidate for the Visa Waiver Program than Argentina.

I think the "visa weaver" is like openin' up a big can full of worms. Imagine all the so called visiting the US for the sole purpose of tourism, but is like having an open invitation for the _perma tourist_ or in the US is called the illegal aliens to come in without any scrutiny and waved in to stay as illegal aliens.!

Or is the US assimilating the Canadian system of no visa required but some gets entry others be sent back.? One to enter Canada never needed to go to the country consulate for visation but when entering there, then the problem!

I was once in Montreal, ended up in a motel full of "detainees" waiting to be deported back to its originating countries. There I befriended an Argentinean young girl and after sharing a table for a breakfast, she started tellin' me the story...

Her boy friend lives in Passaic, N.J. She wanting to go join him but the US consulate in Bs As negated her a tourist visa, so she tried to go to Canada first(cause there was no visa required)to Canada and once in then cross the border to the US ! But her plan had a big flaw, Canada gives the visa once they think you to be a bonafide alien to enter the country! It seems back then, only very smaller portion off arriving so called _tourists_ got the Canadian Visa! So the Canadian govnmnt was deceiving all new comers into Canada big time! After all the new life seekers spending ton of borrowed or robbed money to buy RT ticket to Canada then their entry into, negated in a hurry.!

I entered Canada as a J`citizen and had a chat with the very amicable inmmigration/custom officer that took a lot of interest in my Camera gears i brought in with me,I due to noticing majority of Canada entrants being escorted to no where but to isolation room so I sensed something was amiss then asked the officer. Why is Canada does not have a tourist visa ?
He then said, we do have it, we give or not give the visas when an international visitor is questioned same as am doin' with you...And he also said, many bringing in phony TC in the form of American Express issued ones but all fakes ! So the Canadian were very astute since back then...Just a story to tell.
