A very divided Senate narrowly confirmed Noah Mamet, Obama's nomination as Ambassador to Argentina on Tuesday. Mamet, a Democratic fundraiser, raised U$1.4 Million for Obama's elections. During his confirmation hearing the "bundler" came under fire when asked about his qualifications to be Ambassador to Argentina. He said he had never traveled to Argentina, doesn't speak Spanish, and considered Argentina to be a "US ally." 15 former presidents of the American Foreign Service Association took the unusual act of writing a collective letter of opposition to his nomination.

The US needs a strong Ambassador to Argentina now perhaps more than ever. Kevin Sullivan, the Chargé d'Affaires has been the acting Ambassador. Mr. Sullivan has himself gotten into hot water with none other than Cristina Kirchner over insensitive comments regarding the bond holdouts and is probably thrilled that someone else now gets the chance to spar with the Queen.

Let's hope Ambassador Mamet does better than some of Obama's other "bundler" nominations. Nicole Avant, the fundraiser that Obama sent as Ambassador to the Bahamas (a seriously cushy post) was forced to resign when the State Department determined her embassy was "dysfunctional." As well, Howard Gutman, another "bundler" was sent to Belgium (also a rather pristine post) and was forced to resign when it was found he was ditching his security detail to solicit prostitutes.

There really is no boring day in Argentina.

.......“There was a feeling of, ‘Wait a minute. It’s my money he’s getting that with,’” said one California-based fundraiser of Mamet’s ambassador role.
At least one client also asked Mamet about the possibility of obtaining political appointments for himself. Three sources said Snyder, a principal at an investment firm and a longtime donor, was receiving advice from Mamet about pursuing an overseas post — only to find out later that Mamet had been slated for one instead.

How many BAexpaters will be invited to welcoming dinner at the US embassy in BA for the new ambassador?

What does this say about the strategic importance of a country like Argentina to the major powers that be? Interesting.

When Cristina wrote the scathing letter to President Obama last month she signed it "Cristina." When one of Obama's aides finished reading him the letter in the bathroom there was a moment of silence. Then Obama said, "Crisitina? Cristina who?"

I'm sure I'll be invited, but if they don't serve kale-peanut butter fugazza I doubt I'll attend.

Well maybe? ... half of the 72 Ambassadorships are Political appointees to countries like Hungary , where Ms. Bell who was appointed is a TV producer...!! 36 countries get political bundlers, The political appointees get the most juicy postings, the career diplomats go to Sierra Leone :D

It can say several things. Argentina could be easy to handle, irrelevant, or just a lost cause. The US Ambassador to the UK, for example, is another Obama donor. Given that the UK and the US are on pretty much the same page when it comes to international affairs, a career diplomat isn't seen as "necessary."

I am sure the FSOs at Embassy Buenos Aires are just thrilled to bits...

“Why is ours the only profession where it’s considered acceptable to appoint someone without any experience?” Mr. Kashkett said. “Would you appoint someone to head a hospital without medical experience?”

He'll have his hands full, what with running the currency black market and operating all manner of nefarious schemes to dethrown the otherwise undefeatable Frente para la Victoria, apparently.
