Nuts at nutty prices!

I have thought that nuts were way overpriced for years here. The only time that I found a good deal was in el Tigre where I bought a huge bag of pecans for just a few pesos. If I recall correctly they were callled "Nueces del Delta." Apparently they were not very popular in the country at that time. Perhaps things have changed by now.

That is true! In tigre at the Mercado de Frutos, nuts are dirt cheap.

The eternal question.......why is "xxxxxx" so expensive here??
Answer, taxes, contributions, etc. etc.
Employees in Argentina all have health insurance, paid vacation, union membership, severance pay in the rare case they would get fired, virtually unlimited sick leave, an extra month's salary (aguinaldo) every year AND on top of that, sales tax (IVA) here is a whopping 21% on EVERYTHING. Store employees belong to the "empleados de comercio" union, which is one of the largest and strongest in the country.
Compare this with the USA, where a store employee is paid hourly, no health insurance, if they´re lucky 3 paid sick days per YEAR, and 1 week vacation per after working for an entire year and no severance pay to speak of if they get fired. And there is NO sales tax on unprocessed foods or fruit and vegetables (at least in New York City, where I come from).
Some food for thought.

David, everything you stated above is correct. You forgot to mention however that the minimum wage is about $1,800 pesos / month. And that's for working five days per week up to 10 hours / day in addition to half day's saturday. Works out to about $2 - $3 per hour. Minimum wage in New York State is $7.25 / hour.

I saw pecans (nueses del delta) last weekend at Tigres Mercado de Frutos for 2 kg for 20 pesos I believe it was..

Bought some pecans at Coto in the end....horrendously priced. The unshelled ones were about $ 41 a kilo, but I bought a pack of 170 grams shelled for $ 31. My other half was horrified at the price, but I want to make him a pecan pie for thanksgiving....

Pine nuts you can get at the armenian delis - try the one on Scalabrini Ortiz (a few doors up from the corner with Cabrera) - not cheap either, but then I don't think they are anywhere in the world.
