October Social Security Benefit Not Recieved

Hello All! Thankfully, I got mine okay. I have always dreaded this happening. I don't think it has anything to do with the shutdown. I always get it on the last possible day whenever I have switched direct deposit bank accounts. Last month it was received on the very last possible day.

I also did not receive my normal deposit on the 3rd, the first time ever, nor did my wife. I called the number given above (gracias!) and the Schwab rep said our payments have been cleared & slated for deposit on Monday. He didn't know the reason for the delay --- thought perhaps delivery to Schwab was delayed due to current circumstances --- but he's contacting the ACH dept for a more specific reason. He will email me when he gets more info and I will post accordingly.

I had thought it was a 'Proof of Life' issue, as we each received the mailed forms on 25 Sept. They were dated 31 July, requiring return within 60 days, and were returned to the U.S. Embassy on 30 Sept. Tight one, that.

Somehow all of this supports my idea that all banking should be done in the U.S.. No proof of life and no delay using direct deposit into a bank like Capone which credits the deposit on the first of the month.....no waiting for the 3rd. I realize that this is not possible for everyone.

Thanks for the reminder to check my US account. My benefit was in my account on October 1.

For anything to do with the US federal government, I plan on calling at least three times. Once to initiate the action and at least twice to assure that it was done correctly. The time wasted is the opportunity cost of being here.

NO! I said I was living here temporarily...don't ever say that to a financial institution in the USA unless you are sure they don't care.
I just got off the phone with a Schwab CSR. He told me that others had the same problem and to expect the deposit to be credited later today.

There was no mention of a foreign residency. My contact information (phone numbers and home address) on their website is all In the US.

It was easy to answer one of his security questions instantly from memory: my driver's licence number, which appeared on my first licence, issued on my sixteenth birthday in 1966.

The reason that I had an Argentine address linked to my Social Security account was simply because, in early 2012 I tried to open an account with Santander bank in Bahía Blanca. They only agreed when I told them I could get a benefit letter from the SSA which included my address in Punta Alta. I provided that address to the SSA, got the benefit letter in English and gave the bank a photcopy when I returned to open the account.

For what it's worth, I dialed SSA yesterday and was told that the estimated wait was 120 minutes.

They likely paid some consultant friend of a politician millions of dollars to conclude that saying 120 minutes was more palatable to the citizen sheep than saying two hours.
