We are planning a small trip to Uruguay in a couple of weeks, and I was wondering if any of you knows what a permanent resident should take in order to travel, should he just go with his DNI or both DNI and - American - passport? Thanks for your help!

We've buquebus'd to UY with the DNIs and had no issues. Just had to make sure the DNI was registered with the tickets instead of the passport number.

But either way, its a good idea to bring the passport and keep it in your pocket in case something has changed or they ask to see it.

As far as I know you can travel with just your DNI. But I don't think it will hurt if you bring your US passport too.. However I remember reading somewhere that you have to present your DNI at immigrations, since they consider it your primary means of identification (or something like that)...

Friend of mine was doing monthly trips to Colonia using DNI only. On the forth time immigration officer at the border said that since he is not a citizen, he can travel only with his passport. Luckily he had the passport with him, but he would be in trouble otherwise.

Interesting. Since when I recently came in at Ezeiza from Santiago de Chile, only my DNI got checked/verified/entered... I gave the official my passport and DNI, and without looking at my passport he gave it back to me... And I am a temporary resident...

Been to uruland using dni on tickets and passport on tickets, they inspect passport then also ask for my dni.dni only, never asked for passport but I would take both for
"eventualities".........suerte

I flew to Brazil recently and just took my DNI, no problems at all.. actually much quicker to get through customs
