Does anyone know the rules as to how long you can live outside Argentina without forfeiting permanent residency?
Thanks in advance!

To my knowledge, as long as you have a DNI, you really don't ever lose it.

This came up in another thread. The "answer" was that you must be "in country" at least one day in a two year period or you might have to reapply.

I wonder if anyone would be "caught" by the computer when reentering the country after a two year absence...or if the migraciones officer at the port of entry would actually take any action.

I bet that even if you were outside the country for more than 2 years AFIP would still expect you to keep paying taxes!

My experience was that I was married in 1983 and soon after sought permanent residency and a DNI. It was a long and complicated procedure, and I finally paid an attorney in BA to get me a resident visa through the Houston Consulate. I entered Argentina with the visa, and began the tramites, translations, legalizations, finger prints, letters from the Houston Chief of Police, each step was expensive. I was given a small piece of paper with my photo on it at Migraciones in Antartida Argentina. When I went several weeks later they told me that they had lost the paperwork. I gave up on the DNI, but I can still enter Argentina with my new U.S. Passport, and the old one with the resident visa (and the small piece of paper) and I do not have any fees for other visas or no time limit on my stay, and nobody seems to care how often I enter or leave Argentina. But I still have no DNI and can not open a bank account or sell a property in Argentina without paying extra taxes.

Nobody is double checking how loang are you abroad. However, there might be issues if you get it when you were under 16 and you need to renewal you DNI being over 30 because there they have the evidence that you didn't stayed here the 1 day per year mentioned.
