Hey everyone :)

Pregunta! I want to get a new cable modem for my internet service with Fibertel. Reading about different cable modems (in the USA), they consistently say that once you get a new cable modem, you have to contact your ISP and get them to change a configuration on their side so you can use it. It seems like this is called "authenticating" or "re-provisioning" a modem, in English. I'm wondering if anyone has done this with Fibertel. My worry is that I buy a new modem and they then just don't offer re-provisioning.

Gratzie!!!!

Can't you use the modem provided by Fibertel? You could always call them up and tell them the original cable modem provided by Fibertel is not working well and most likely they'll come and most likely get you a new one.

Silvie,

Thanks for your feedback! I'm asking a different question. I know I can get another modem from fibertel; but I'm wondering about using an outside, non-Fibertel modem. Not all modems are created equal; some are more equal than others. Two legs good, four legs bad!

Inquiry in person at the nearest office of Fibertel. I would take a list of the modems you are considering with respective specs.

One of the big drawbacks with a fibertel modem/router is that they won't allow you to make advanced config changes.

Actually you can get the admin password by calling them and then make advanced config changes from http://192.168.0.1. I have done that. On most occasions, the modems have default passwords. I guess it's not very safe to keep it that way. That's another reason to know the password and change it.

One caveat is that the password will be reset to the default one whenever the modem restarts. But if you keep them plugged in and have no power failure, you don't need to worry about that.

Gracielle,

My overwhelming experience with Argie big company (and government) bureaucracies such as Fibertel, Movistar, etc, is that any customer support request that isn't one of the 3 most common questions they get -- will result in a "no." Sometimes a direct and explicit "no"; but sometimes a referral to another department which then refers you to another department which then refers you to another department (in an endless magically realistic circle as though I'm in a Borges short story); sometimes a "yes we can" but then it never seems to happen for one reason or another; sometimes a "let me research if that is possible and I'll get back to you" (and they never do); etc. But somehow, any non-common request just never results in a non-common request being fulfilled. Argentines are the masters of saying "no" in as many ways as the Eskimos have of saying "snow": 500 apparently, although my college linguistics 101 prof argued that that was a myth. This is why I asked the question: if someone, somewhere, somehow succeeded in doing this, it would give me that glimmer of hope I need, to invest in a better modem :)

I've used Fibertel customer support a few times with mixed results, but usually ended up with what I wanted.

Have you just called their tech support and asked "Puedo reemplazar el modem suyo con uno que yo compré, y cómo?"

Never know, you might get an answer.

EJ Larson,

That would definitely be a wiser move than asking random Internet folks on BAExpats. You are both smarter than I am and more practical than I am :) It was silly of me to ask here rather than ask Fibertel directly!!

BTW, an interesting characteristic of Argie customer support is the total arbitrariness of it. MANY times, I call up, they say "no" (in some way), I call back again and someone else says "no", and after the sixth time.... someone says "yes" and gets it done!

Technical support at night is much better than during the day. Dont know why but I now dont call during the day unless it is very simple.
