quick set of questions about argentine pumpkin empanadas...
here goes:
  • is there such a thing as "argentine" pumpkin empanada (or is it really a "mexican" thing - only?)
  • if there is, with cheese in the center (or not)?
  • if with, then (i'm working with what i got in the fridge today): cheddar, gouda, or cream cheese?
  • is a pumpkin empanada a "food" thing, or a "sweet" (treat) - never as a meal thing?
  • lastly, if there is such a thing as an "argentine pumpkin empanada", in there a corresponding traditional edge crimp (indicating the that it is pumpkin vs. queso o carne o ...)?
thnx,
m.

I've never seen pumpkin empanadas either, neither here nor the places I've travelled to in Latin America. I'd say Argentina is more inventive with the fillings. However, there's quite a range of options for the "envelope", not simply the wheat-flour common in Argentina or Chile ("empanadas de pino" in Chile), though you might find potato-flour empanadas ("empanadas de chuño"), but you have plantain dough in Ecuador ("empanadas de verde") and corn-flour is the default in Colombia and Venezuela. The Colombians fill theirs with mashed potato too, very nice :)

Sopaipillas are a tradition in Chile and less popular in argentinian provinces of Mendoza and San Juan. Sopaipillas are round and contain pumpkin. Nowadays you can find the dought to get Sopaipillas ready at chile next to the dought for empanadas.
