I would second getting instagram.
Everything here happens thru instagram and whatsap.
Nobody maintains websites, even governmental agencies are usually out of date.
Concerts, Dance events, parties and art shows are posted on Instagram the day before, unless it some geriatric rock group like Guns and Roses, and most of the interesting stuff is only on IG.

About San Telmo, I stay there when I'm in BA usually. It's a main tourist stop. It's as safe as anywhere what. Be aware of your surroundings, but I haven't found any parts of BA central to be unsafe.

Regarding learning Spanish, I've used spanishdict.com they have a program there. There was a recent pay in the forum about a group offering very affordable 2hr lessons I think in San Telmo. Try not to get too hung up on grammar (conjugation) at the beginning. Spanish speakers will understand what you mean.

There aren't buses in San Telmo anymore. You have to take them from metrobus 9 de Julio or Paseo Colon.

We were at an El Gran Combo concert at the Teatro Gran Rex on Avenida Cordoba last night. Possibly a good occasion to meet salsa lovers. I believe tonight's concert is sold out, though. The various online ticket vendors, and the venues themselves (Movistar Arena, Gran Rex, etc) will give a heads-up about upcoming events.

I don't think salsa is hugely popular among Argentinians, though, I'd say most of the audience last night was from the Caribbean, Ecuador, and for some reason, Peru.

It's not free anymore. I tried to take it one day, just to try it, but it doesn't accept SUBE. They're small, and they have a limited local route.
