Seeing Is Believing

If someone told me about this, I wouldn't believe them. But in the past 2 weeks I've seen it several time. What? I have lived in BA for many years and never saw a portero use a broom. In the past they all watered the sidewalks with a hose. They also never picked up a piece of paper in front of their buildings; they kicked the paper into the gutter. I remember telling someone to give their portero a broom for Christmas, but that they should make sure that instructions about using this strange thing on a stick were attached. Now, I'm seeing these guys (are they all guys?) with brooms! Since this will mean that they may be doing strenuous work, they may want a pay raise? Times, they are a changing.
