Why do Americans almost always refer to Colombia, as Columbia?

I was wondering about the same. It is not that hard to remember that it has just one letter that differs. Is like colon+bia.
 
Well, I learn a lot by differences. For example "this English word looks like this other Italian word but there are these differences". Or "this English word is very similar to this Italian word but the meaning is completely different".

Latin: Christophorus Columbus

vs

Spanish: Cristóbal Colón
Italian: Cristoforo Colombo
