I lived in Villa Luro from 2019 to 2024. The west entrance to the Villa Luro station for the Sarmiento train line is adjacent to a covered large cylindrical hole, about 3 meters in diameter, and alongside was a dirty diesel generator running a pump to remove the water that infiltrated the hole. I understand that the grade crossing at Av Irigoyen will be replaced with an underpass.
I remember a large billboard in Salta in 2020. It proclaimed a new, improved railroad, thanks to CFK. No one bothered to remove the billboard, paradoxically placed near the washed out, old, abandoned rail line.
Politicians the world over only care about the short term. In the Sarmiento lIne case, the practical benefit is only realized when the project is completed, and the line is in operation. But the politicians like the fantasy, the bribes, and as long as the government can print more and more money, damn the consequences.
In the US, military procurement is poisoned by the urge to bring jobs into the congressional district that a politician represents. Even if the military does not want the base, or the weapon ordered. Budget deficits in the trillions are bemoaned, but that is just idle chatter. Old people are more than willing to pass along a huge debt to succeeding generations.
