Smart phone without a contract?

I use my iPhone 3GS with prepaid Movistar. I disagree that it's a pain; it works fine for me, but it's really expensive, so I just keep it turned off most of the time.

The pain is that to use data "cheaply", you have to send a text message to get the 1GB to use over 2 days. Then, if you forget to turn the data off when that 2 days is up, it eats into your credit quickly. It does not simply not work.

When I had pre-paid (before my wife signed me up with her plan), it was a constant pain. Send a text message for data, get confirmation, turn data on, get emails that I wanted, turn data off, etc.

How do I pay the 10 pesos for the 24 hours of Movistar data? I already have a prepaid Movistar SIM card.

Send a text message with the word DATOS to 2345 to get 1GB of data to use over 2 days. I have more Movistar tips at http://www.discoverbuenosaires.com/movistar-pre-paid-argentina

I also have another brand new iPhone 4 16GB but it is locked to ATT. I am told that it can be "jailbreaked" easily by many cell dealers in Argentina but I would be willing to sell it as is--which could be a bargain for the right buyer, compared to the "open market" prices for iPhones in Argentina.

I might be interested in buying your iPhone. Send me a PM with more info.

Thanks.

THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE! this is very helpful! My boyfriend is getting his residency in a month and we're going to do a plan together, but i'm going to head on down to a movistar and get my iphone up and running!

To answer the question of where i bought it/how much I paid for it - I paid 250 USD for it used on ebay - its in great condition and came unlocked with a bunch of standard apps (skype, chat, etc) already enabled.

In terms of GETTING a phone unlocked, i'd go down to barrio chino and ask around. They seem to be tops at unlocking phones.

Cheers all! ps - i don't know why i'm still a newcomer on this forum, i've lived in BA for over 9 months now.... ah well.

I am now hearing that in the past couple days neither Movistar, Claro or Personal have data on available on their prepaid plans. Does anyone know if this is actually true? This info has been posted at : http://paygsimwithdata.wikia.com/wiki/Argentina but seems to conflict with what I am reading on here, but then a lot can happen in a couple days. I don't want to go through the trouble of buying a SIM card and a credit and find that I can't get data.

Anyone know?

I'm not an expert with computers and I unlocked it myself pretty easily. All you do is download software and click unlock on the program and your iphone reboots itself and unlocks. I would suggest looking on mac forums, its not that hard if you do a bit of investigating.

As of like 1 week ago you can get data with your smart phone with Claro Prepago because I had to ask them to deactivate the Internet (data) on my phone because my iphone would send text messages over the Internet using GPRS instead of the cheaper SMS way.
