So Whats The Go On Having Goods Sent From Outside?

Simple. Hire a Air Freight specialist. Ship the ring to Miami , they air freight it here. No duty , no taxes , no customs , no nothing. Pick it up at their offices , pay the air freight. PM me for a recommended company..

No Problem.

Can I get commercial beer barrels this way also?

From your forum name, I assume you are from Australia. I agree with other forum members -- don't take a chance on sending. Maybe ask on the forum if anyone will be traveling from Australia to Argentina, and trust them to bring it to you. Even better if the traveler is a woman and can just wear the ring --

Sure am, but was looking at having this made by a specialist jeweller elsewhere as this guys craftmanship is beyond amazing.
I have no idea what half the stuff mentioned in this thread is or means, so I think my safest bet is to get it shipped to a mate and grab it from them on my next business trip.

I just got married and my wife's engagement ring lost a stone, my wife and I know the maker well he offered to send a entire new replacement as his gift to us. I warned him about the shipping headaches but he insisted on sending it.

I told him the best bet on it getting here was is a small letter size envelope not marked as jewelery or anything of any value. It arrived 3 weeks later dropped in mailbox to my surprise.

I understand it may not be ideal for you or anything your willing to risk but just wanted to add my experience on similar situation.

One of those cases which truly calls for a helloooooooooooooo.

I thought a while back that bajo should make helloooooooo his signature, but now I think it should be the default signature on the site, period.

One of yr best posts. loved it!

Downunder - Retiro refers to this strange little place down by the Retiro bus station that you might have to go to collect a parcel sent to you internationally if it's anything bigger than an envelope. You'll (eventually) get a card telling you it's waiting for you there. You might not get the first or second notification, so it will you'll have to pay a fine for not collecting it sooner even though you've gone straight there as soon as you got the card. You can't collect it without the card. Then you'll have to wait whilst they shout out a list of numbers over a crackly tannoy, one of which will be yours (about an hour after you've arrived if you're lucky) and have to go through a door to collect your parcel, where you'll confirm the contents (they might even open it these days) and be on your way.

Ezeiza - similar process but you'll have to go to a place near the airport (I never had the pleasure as after my first trip to Retiro, I told everyone not to send me anything). You'll probably have to pay a random tax on your package and the contents will be checked.

The other thing to expect is that it might arrive in a few weeks, but more likely you'll get it 4-5 months later if at all. The parcel I was collecting was a book from Amazon that I needed for my work (impossible to get in Argentina). It took about 4 months for me to get it. Around the same time we had a couple of packages sent by family, neither of them containing anything valuable (some kids drawings, birthday cards, a pair of slippers!), neither of them ever arrived. This was a few years ago before they tightened up on imports, which gave the aduana (import tax people) even more of an excuse to hold on to your stuff.

So if you have an option of collecting yourself, then I'd say that this is the fastest and least stressful way of obtaining the ring! You might be lucky as JoshF was, but if there's another way, I'd go for that over using the post.

I don't live in Argentina any more, and to be honest I'd say the difficulty getting mail is in the top 10 (if not 5) of my reasons for this. Seems a very petty thing, but when you're far from your family, it's a real comfort to get letters, drawings from nieces and nephews etc. Hopefully this is something that will start to change with the new government.

You get what you pay for. US$35 per kilo is the cost to get your things in fast , with no customs , duties , lines or any other hassle. I have used them dozens of times , never had anything lost or held. Paid cash and most times I get my packages delivered to my door in Olivos. I just used them to bring in The Star Class World Championship trophy , which was presented last week at Club Nautico San Isidro. It weighs 35 kilos , is valued at over US$30,000 , and arrived and departed with no issues whatsoever.

I once sent US$1000 from the US to Argentina using Federal Express. When my wife received the envelope, it had been opened and was empty.

I also had the "Retiro" expierence, but back then, you waited in one room for two hours, then waited in another room for two hours.

I'm now like some of the other posters. I haven't had anything sent to me here for years.

I once had a ring sent here and it took an age to come, but did make it. I sent it regular post from the UK in a normal envolope closed in a letter. This was 2008 and much has changed, but even then I accepted that it was a risky thing to do, but it was only a £50 silver ring so ultimately I was willing to take the hit if it was lost. Once my now wife also sent me a ring from here to the UK, it also made it... in fact she sent two at different times. Again, this was a different time and things have gotten much worse. I have had the aduana experience and it was all in all one of the shittiest days of my life in terms of just feeling like you are having your pants pulled down while Argentina points and laughs at you.
