Guy pulled in 76 pesos in 30 minutes last year and I bet it would have been more had he played in one of the trains.

I quite enjoy the subte buskers and almost always throw something in the hat. The talented ones who stay in one car for most of the trip usually pull fives or tens from a good portion of the passengers. I'm kind of shocked to read that some considered it to be equivalent to begging.

The talented subte musicians deserve it... the subte is terrible, between the heat, the crowds, and the tactic of leaving a product on your lap. The good musicians make it so much better.

I suspect that those who were likening a specific busker to begging had more to do with someone traveling internationally with little or no money and possibly as little preparation and thought about where his next meal/shelter or even ride would come from on the road while depending on the largesse of unknown others, as opposed to someone playing on a subway and earning a living from a willing audience.

I don't give money to beggars - it's a great scam for people to earn a "living" and all they have to do is shuck whatever pride in themselves they have to do it; and I often can't tell the difference between beggars who are really down on their luck and need some help vs. guys like the ones I used to talk to in Plaza San Martin who purposefully came to Buenos Aires from Corrientes because BA has more people with more money (yeah, while drunk they admitted this to me, though it was often hard to understand what they were saying they were so sloshed all the time).

I do, however, contribute to the guys doing juggling and other feats of skills at intersections throughout where I drive because they give value while asking for donations, much as buskers in subtes do.

If Jaime Devlin is the same violin player who played "Oh Danny Boy" regularly on the Subte D in 2012 or 2013, I have to say I wish him well and am glad to here of his arrival, and I want to say THANK YOU. If he's a different violin player, I wish him well as well!

I was having a really stressful time at work that year(s). My company was very chanta and unethical, and it really had me buggin' about the state of humanity. There were at least two subways rides where that same violinist, clearly an expat by the accent, deeply moved me to tears and made me forget what I was stressing about, and I walked out of the subway a better, happier person for it. I give money to the talented musicians as well; I see it as the BsAs cultural fund.

I wish I had heard the violinist! There used to be a very talented female guitarist on the Mitre line, and after we heard her a few times doing her thing, we ended up hiring her for a birthday party. Awesome. Despite our friends' predictions that she wouldn't show up (no, we didn't pay in advance), she was right on time, fired up the party when it was getting sleepy, and had everyone singing late into the evening. Even the semi-lousy musicians on the trains and subtle don't bug me much...at least they aren't begging and/or stealing, and sometimes they are amazing.

Did you hear this banda callejera, FolkHop on the Tren Mitre, @mmoon? The youtube videos don't show how good they are live. I used to take the tren Mitre to work in the morning. They really put the ritmo back in la mañana!!

My favourite was the chap on the bagpipes at going home time in Plaza San Martin.

Someone who negotiated and did not buy a car is not a moocher, it's called a bad business. To generalize and accuse an entire culture of people is a moocher , is racism. (Which century do you live in now ? when do you see all the Chinese go to a car dealer place and not buying a car ? :) Chinese bought 20 millions of cars in 2013 ) Someone who stayed at your house for 3 months is a moocher.

Read it more closely no racism here, I have many close Chinese friends. I did not refer car buying in China but in the US. Go in to any car dealership in the states and ask any salesperson which nationality are the best customers. They all tell you the locals IE Americanos born and raised there. They all tell me in other to sell to an immigrant Chinese, they have to through in many freebies cause they always ask for more. No sale made unless you give them all the freebies they wanting. In fact, on weekends, if you go to a car yard looking to perhaps buy a car, if you are seen as perhaps Chinese, them all sales persons shy away, cause they know that taking time to convince a Chinese buyers to buy is wasting your money making weekend catering to non-Chinese customers, being told.

That is a fact related from many auto sales persons saying, they are "moochers" give, give, give me more or no sale...I even know a few Chinese auto sales persons, when I ask them about the buying behaviour of their own, they all saz, Nah, won't spend any time with my people cause they waste my time, they want too many freebies and at the end don't buy nothing!..Instead would concentrate catering to non-Chinese crowd, that is the answer from a Chinese auto sales persons. Horse's mouth!

A dealer sales manager once told me, the Chinese customers counter offer prices, that are way below "invoice" so no sale obviously. Apparently they think there are at least 50% mark up for that car's sticker price. And if agreeing to final sale price after 5 hours negotiating ordeal, then wanting more stuff thrown in to close the deal. So the dealer manager said point in blank, I rather not wanting them come to my dealership on a busy weekend and waste my sales person's valuable time and our business!

But in Lat Am, everyone has to pay what the local dealer wanting for that car, or no driving home in a new car ever, they are not such thing as trying to steal that car by asking for more and more discount! In summary, the Chinese are very tough negotiator, main land or abroad, if wishing to make business with them, you have got to throw in much "moochies" they like or no entry into China's selling!

That is why "Xi Jin Ping" is trying to clean house, more than 55k "moochies" behind bar and counting...Chinese are raised to always ask for much, much freebies, if not giving to them, no business from them!

I used to think so but now it feels fairly tame. Now the deep end looks more like this guy backpacking across South America with only a violin to pay his way. There's a real adventure for you! Bet he doesn't have time to spend 3 hours a week lecturing people on the dangers of bitcoin.

Its gutsy for sure, I wonder if he was the guy I saw in the subway a few months ago playing, if so hes really good!
