Tango as sex tourism

After talking to dozens of tango tourists from North America and Europe - informal interviews conducted over the 12 months I've had the pleasure of living in this fine city - I have come to the realization that the tango industry in Buenos Aires is an important, effective and highly beneficial form of sex tourism. I would like to take this moment to thank the Argentinian people, especially the men, for making this service possible.

The love market in the northern hemisphere is in a state of pathological disequilibrium. Smart, strong, successful women are often ignored by culturally-bred shallow men chasing Paris Hilton wannabes with nonthreatening IQs. As a result, the market doesn't clear properly and too many single people in the north, especially mid-career professionals, live empty, unsatisfied lives. Women are overlooked precisely because of their virtues of strength and wisdom, while men, living off one cotton-candy romance after another, are starved for the reality of true love without even realizing it. Loneliness and regret are common characteristics of northerners, and it all comes from the fact that our market for love does not effectively match buyers and sellers.

But thankfully the great nation of Argentina has risen to the occasion, giving the women of the northern hemisphere a way to find true love - albeit short term true love - while correcting a serious market imbalance that threatens the happiness of all. I suppose we should probably thank Argentina's disastrous economic policy for this gift, since the regular economic meltdowns in this country are what makes tango tourism, as opposed to, say, flamenco tourism, an attractive option.

Handsome, free-range, beef-fed Argentinian studs, posing as tango instructors, have committed their lives to meeting the emotional and physical needs of successful but forlorn gringas passing through Buenos Aires on extended tourist visas. They dance, they romance, they love, and, yes, they fuck. It's like water running downhill. Every single tango tourist I have met in Argentina has had an affair with her instructor. Every last one! This may be a statistical anomaly. Maybe just my female tango tourist friends are hooking up with their instructors - they're certainly not hooking up with me. Perhaps someone, anyone, in the BAExpat community knows of a women who has not danced in the sack with her teacher. But at this point the data seem overwhelming: unspoken sex tourism is the throbbing heart of the Buenos Aires tango business, and possibly the tourism industry here as a whole.

The trend is so pervasive that you should change the motto of this wonderful city to "Buenos Aires: Come for the tango, stay for the multiple orgasms" or "Buenos Aires: Tango will change your life if you just let it come inside you" or "Relax, it's not sex tourism if you call it a dance lesson." I've often wondered how long it would take me to learn tango, and then get so good at it that I can offer services as a professional "dance" instructor, one with a very private studio in Almagro. What a great life that must be. Do you have to apply for some kind of license first? Is it like a pilot's license, where you have to log thousands of training hours before you can legally service paying customers? How many northern women do you have to sleep with before you become an officially certified dance professional?

So kudos to Argentina! Seriously. In a globalized economy you are stepping up to provide a service that American and European men are too pathetic to perform themselves. It's embarrassing to me that American women must travel to Argentina to find a real man to take them seriously, but that's the reality of our pathological love market back home. You can't expect these girls to sit still in their leather office chairs while we're chasing bimbos around the mail room. Besides, the globalization of love is good for tango students - it's obviously good for tango instructors - and most importantly it's good for the Argentine economy. Everybody wins!

PS - One thing I have learned in the course of my conversations is that whatever you say, don't call tango sex tourism. Apparently, saying what it is takes the romance out of the experience, kind of like touching while tangoing, and most women don't like to think of themselves as sex tourists in any case, especially while they're doing it. I consider this the first and perhaps most important lesson on my path to becoming a professional tango instructor.

This must be one of the funniest posts I have read here . Has anyone seen the average age of the Milonguero and the better ones are close to 70 years of age .

There will always be woman and men who believe in fantasies and the sexualization of Tango is a marketing dream. Unfortunately the reality is not one of rampant sexuality but one more and more of desperation and hysteria.

Another interpretation: Women have and will always choose men according to power (mostly money). Given that a number of women is more independent nowadays, they tend to search for a smaller number of men above them in the social pyramid. Of course some of them will not find a mate which is more powerful than themselves. So there you have: a lot of middle aged European men swarm over Thailand searching for young things, and some women already out of the market (when you reach 35,girls, it is over, unless you are Jacqueline Bisset, and you aren´t) will come South looking to score a cool tango guy that needs the money. But regrettably for them, guys mostly go for beauty, not green bills. They will gladly use you,and throw you away when their local young and romantic girlfriend calls to their cellphones.

If they instead decided to conform themselves with poorer males from their own country, this would not happen. But go say to them about that: "He doesn´t want to succed", "He is a slacker", etc etc etc.

Girls, you had your "liberation". Now deal with being alone forever.

Wow - congrats marksoc on writing one of the most ridiculous and misogynistic posts I have ever read.

As for the tango stuff - is it that surprising? Women on vacation, the myth of the "Latin lover" that is ever so enticing, man in position of "instructor", sweaty, sexy dancing -- not rocket science to think it might end up being a slightly different type of dancing that occurs between the two ;)

.......woah

Excellent post, marksoc.

Of course, feminists like city-grrrlll would attack it.

They wouldn't if it wasn't the truth..

Dude, you have massively misunderstood the spirit of this thread! And your "interpretation" comes across as so bitter! Trust me, if you're having bad luck with the ladies, it's not because you're short of money or power, it's because they can smell the festering negativity in you.

And also probably because you don't know how to tango.

You can be dirt poor, even ugly and old (as Perry points out), and utterly without leverage in the world. But if you know how to tango you will have an endless stream of smart, sexy, strong women lining up to get a piece of you and your dancing chorizo. You supply the chori, and they will supply the pan. Guaranteed. That's the beauty of tango, and it's the crown jewel of Buenos Aires. The tourism industry here is one giant chori completa, with extra huevos and salsa de queso y crema on the side. You should give it a try. Then maybe you won't be "alone forever."

This post is insane!!!

I've been living here since 2003, dancing here since 1997, and since 2006 have been teaching with my milonguero partner. We seem to specialize in tango tourists because our classes are bilingual and personal. Dancers quickly learn from us how to manage themselves in the milongas along with the mystique and codigos.

Are you kidding me? We have had hundreds of foreign female students who ONLY WANT TO IMPROVE THEIR TANGO!

Sure, there are those who come here to dance and also to enjoy the attentions of porteños. Foreign men are the same with porteñas.

But that's not why they are taking tango lessons with us. Obviously. But just so you know, there are many many folks who appreciate how the milongueros dance, and embrace, and express the music (not electronic tango, but emotional, passionate renditions of the classic orchestras of the Golden Age), because in their countries it's all cold, colorless, unemotional, and stiff. (I can always recognize a foreigner on the dance floor.)

Anywhere you have a meeting of men and women, there's going to be "something extra" in the mix. But to say that all foreign female tango students in BsAs sleep with their teachers is loco.

Good post Cherie

Too many people like to commercialise things and change what is original to their way . Tango is an art and should be respected as one . This phenomenon of sex tango including the Tango Taxi dancer for me cheapens the sensual and replaces it with something animalistic.

Many tradition milongueros and milongueras are saddened by this and see their milongas being trampled by those with no respect for their culture and the original dance.

Argentine Tango is art and passion and is the soul and essence of Buenos Aires . Commercialing and sexualising this dance will only do harm to Tango and make it lose its energy and spirit.....

A word of advice: Mix tango with sex and not only will you get seriously burned in the love arena but you will also soon find yourself as a pariah on the milonga floor.

I have been married for thirty five years and I love tango, my wife loves tango, we go to dance, with each other and with partners. It is a wonderfull social scene, a chance to meet people and a brilliant way to keep fit. Sex is NEVER on the menue, if ever it was on offer I would loose premission to go to milongas and possibly my marriage as well.

I think that the original post was tounge in cheek, please do not take it as more than that.
