I first came to BA in April of 07 in hopes of taking in an opera at the world famous Colon only to find it under rennovation. At that time the word I heard from everyone was that it was scheduled for a grand re-opening in May of 2008. I returned in Jan of this year only to find it still enshrouded in construction clothes. Does anyone have any idea when this great icon of the operatic world will eventually reopen?

I've been told that it absolutely will be re-opened for the bicentenary, fourteen months away, if not sooner.

But, then, this wouldn't be the first time that a politician's promise went unfulfilled, would it?

You heard right: it WAS scheduled to open in May 2008 on the 100th anniversary of its first opening with a performance of Aida (the original first performance there 100 years before). But it didn't. RWS has hopes of a reopening for the bicentennial: I'm afraid I've heard 2011 - and even that's not very hopeful given that Don Mauricio seems much more interested in football than music.

However, if you are looking for opera in Buenos Aires don't overlook the Lirica and the Juventus Lyrica companies which will be provding the 2009 season in the Teatro Avenida - which is a lovely opera house, though much much smaller than Colón. We saw first class productions from both companies last year.

The Lirica season was flagged up on this website under the daily url for March 12 at http://baexpats.org/daily-url/4131-daily-url-mar-12-a.html (see mar 9th buenos aires lirica 2009 season, further down the page which resolves to http://www.batravelguide.com/2009/03/opera-buenos-aires-lirica-2009-season.html)
You will find the Juventus season at:http://www.batravelguide.com/2009/01/opera-juventus-lyrica-announced-its.html
