The New 50

Because the Islands are part of the "Territorio Nacional"? Really? What's next, Mexico will start trying to take back Texas and claim it's part of Mexico? Wait that has sort of been happening for a while now. I found this the other day. We live in a crazy world. Only the Falklands don't actually want pesos.

Good for them. They know who there clientele is and are running a promotion accordingly. I think you are confusing that with this:

"But the promotion has already hit a nerve in the nationwide immigration debate. The company’s Dallas headquarters received about 1,000 e-mail messages on Thursday alone. Some were supportive, but many called the idea unpatriotic, with messages like, “If you want to accept the peso, go to Mexico!” There were even a few death threats."

One of my new hobbies bored and living in Texas is to speak Spanish with anyone I can find, especially in front of my hillbilly relatives who are ardent adherents of the "If ya cain't speak tha layngweg, go back ta Mexico" mindset. No death threats received yet, but it's still early.

And Mexican and Canadian border cities should not accept US dollars!

This is not a racist matter. If they wanted to enter the country and become full Americans I'd never oppose it. I just see a parallel trying to claim back a territory that they never really used or wanted. It's quite an imperfect analogy since one thing is cultural/ social and Argentina's Falklands claim is purely political, although some Argentines actually feel that way too.

I'm not against immigration. If some people need to immigrate illegally because of their personal situation, it's just a shame, I wish they got dealt a better hand in life. I will not judge them. My problem is with the fact that unlike other immigration waves, this one doesn't seem to be assimilating American culture. One way or another I've overheard conversations of people saying they will take back TX, and CA and what not. That is not the idea and I find that notion very disturbing.

Also... if a restaurant wants to take pesos it shouldn't be illegal, although it's not legal tender. If a Fogo de Chao in Chicago suddenly wants to take Reais then it will be up to them to exchange them back into dollars. I was just trying to point out a parallel. Please don't misinterpret my words.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but what do you mean by "full American?"

Full Americans SHOULD speak English, love their country and what it represents (not the government), be law abiding citizens that do not harm or hate others. Unfortunately many US born Americans fail to cover all of those.

I don't oppose a path to citizenship for everyone that wants to become American. For someone who thinks their taking back Texas or refuses to learn English I have much less sympathy.
