I love how everyone is so happy and open about having therapists/psychologists/psychiatrists, i think it's something europe could learn from- that's for sure. I was wondering if any one knew of a way to obtain contact info for therapists who speak english?

Yeah, I loved it too until I needed some real help. Do you want Freudian psychoanalysis or cognitive behavioral therapy? For the latter you may have to do a lot more looking than you'd like to, English speaking or not. Argentina, like much of Latin America, is still pretty big into Freudian psychoanalysis whereas the U.S. and I believe the UK (if not the rest of the world, can't be bothered to research) have pretty much left if behind, believing that, well, it's ineffective bullshit.

Here's a tip: If five minutes into your first session the psychologist starts asking about your childhood out of the blue, you can be pretty sure you are seeing a friend of Freud.

Whatever you're looking for, here's an article from the Argentina Independent about two expat therapists: http://www.argentinaindependent.com/top-story/analyse-this-therapy-in-english-/

Best of luck to you in your search. I hope you get the help you need.

Sorry I can't help you with info to see a good therapist here - as I don't know any - but I want to elaborate on the last post.

I'm a psychologist who trained outside sth america and I totally agree with the above post. My 7 years at University studying psychology inculded maybe 2 classes about Freud (to understand some history of how psychology evolved)

Psychoanalysis is a tiny tiny part of psycology - but it seems to be all they practice here - if you want to explore your childhood and how good or bad it was - it's for you. But if you want support to resolve issues in the here and now or if you have problems with illnesses - depression etc...check out good psychologists or psychiatrists. They do exist here - and they practice CBT, DBT, other behavioural therapies and many other good models - but be sure they are certified psychologists and psychiatrists and not simply psycolanalists

Here is a note from Susana Olañeta, a clinical Psychologist in Palermo who speaks excellent English:

I'm a local clinical Psychologist offering professional Counseling services to those who'd like to make the most out of their individual or family stay in BA.

I offer a private practice, including various topics such as mood swings, relationship issues, positive adjustment, self-confidence and anxiety disorders, amongst others.
Whatever your concerns may be, we can work through them in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

I´ve been working with expats since 2005 and I´m personally experienced in what it is to be an expatriate myself, so I've experienced the feelings and anxieties inherent to those far from home!

If you would like to find out more about my services, please contact me at [email protected] – Your questions are welcome. Thanks!

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Lic. Susana Olañeta – (U.B.A. - M.N.4887 and M.P.5443) –

I am a licensed psychologist in the US and am planning to move to BsAs next year. I am glad to hear that some people are looking for CBT because i do not do psychoanalysis. For those of you that are seeing English speaking therapist do they often work independently or in a group practice?

Hi all!
I'm a cofounder of Genesis4expats, a team of bilingual psychologists and psychiatrists, specialized in English speaking expats. Our consulting rooms are down town and in the northern suburbs. Most of us have been trained (and some have worked) in the US and we are all experienced professionals covering most mental health fields. We have CBT and DBT specialists, as well psychoanalysts, for children, adolescents and adults, couples and families. Should you be interested, send an email to [email protected]
We will be more than happy to find the right person for you!
