Train To Mendoza?

Hey!

I'm new here, I lived all over Santa Fe province as an LDS missionary a few years ago and will be coming back for a visit this summer. I am super interested in checking out the Andes and it looks like the best/most economical way of doing that is by taking a train from the capital to Cordoba and then bus to Mendoza. Is there a train that goes to Mendoza? Are these schedules current? This site mentions that there is a train to Mendoza but then doesn't give any information about it... ? Thank you all for your help!

There is no train to Mendoza and, in any event, trains are not advisable in Argentina except perhaps the tourist steam train in Esquel.

There used to be a trains to Mendoza 20+ years ago roughly. Absolutely stellar scenery too, tunnels, you can still see the tracks running along side parts of the highway leading to Mendoza. I would seriously pay good money to ride that train if it was still running. But alas, governments of the past apparently let it crumble.

Check into El Mendocino buses, they're a bit less expensive and provide pretty top notch bus service in my experience.

What is wrong with trains in Argentina? All that I have heard is that they take longer and are not usually something tourists do. I thought it would be a good way to see parts of Argentina that I normally wouldn't.

A former president got rid of the national railroad system "for our own good". Same dude that promised us shuttles that would go to Japan in less than 3 hours.

Presuming you don't mind arriving ten hours late, after having waited for the bus to arrive when the train breaks down.

Ah but what would be a more 'authentic' Argentine experience than that!? Haha, thanks for the heads up. Oh also what is the best prepaid carrier for sms/calls to the US? Claro looks like they are the cheapest from what I can tell. Thanks!
