As someone who strongly dislikes the oligarchy, whether it be MSNBC and Joe Biden, Musk and Carlson and Milei, or FOX and Trump, I'd appreciate even a veneer of tough questions, i.e. someone asking Joe Biden about how he reminds people of their elderly parents/grandparents sundowning, telling the same damn story about the paint store on Main Street at dinner, or someone asking Milei how he plans to implement his agenda if he doesn't have congress nor the dollars to do so, or someone asking Elon Musk why his daughter hates him so much she'd rather not inherit billions and change her name, etc than the softball, milquetoast questions we see.

I'm not naïve, I realize the media's job is manufacturer consent for their clients, whether it be FOX for Trump or CNN for Biden, or LN for Bullrich, but at least pretend you're not paying them to do this, get an audience that normally would never hear you speak and make you uncomfortable. As much as I hate Patricia Bullrich at least she goes to Chaco and let's people call her a murderous c*nt to her face, you don't see Biden or Trump doing that, talk about snowflakes.
I think what you are saying does so much to explain why it is that people are so dissatisfied across national borders and political ideologies. I tell my American friends who seem convinced that having third parties is the answer (because then they'll have "real choice") that it won't make a difference. In all these countries I've lived in where 20+ people run in the first round it always gets narrowed down to two (now three here in ARG) people that the majority of people are not really all that enthused about. Instead of these incremental changes that some think are fixes to a non-functioning system it's the entire hyper-capitalist system that needs to be torn down with something taking it's place that's actually sustainable and benefits society as opposed to depleting it's human and natural resources and leaving us all feeling empty and neglected. But that's a whole 'nother topic.

Elections and politics are a joke. Politics has become (at least or esp. in the US) a purely performative act focused on the ego of the politician as opposed to being about making society (or even their own district) the best it can be for all. I no longer believe any solutions to the major (or even more minor) problems society faces will be solved by politicians. I'm more optimistic when I look toward science and the arts for solutions.

The upcoming presidential election in the US is probably one of the most disappointing in a long line of uninspiring elections I've witnessed. The overwhelming majority of people don't want either of the candidates being forced down their throats. I can at least understand it with the GOP who are more inclined to favor a 'strong man' authoritarian type who will take charge, but the Dems are even worse this time around considering they have a younger bench they could go to who might actually inspire voters under 40/50/even 60 who wonder if Biden can make it through a full second term and aren't all that thrilled with Harris, but would love to have the Boomer generation version of a Bill Clinton who doesn't seem so generationally distant and who has a vested interest in dealing with the important issues that young people will face which are being left behind for them. It's odd in that you expect cults of personality from the GOP but you don't expect the Dems to keep all potential challengers sidelined until 2028. They probably remember the past elections where the sitting Dem president got primaried and want to maintain power above all. Regardless, I have zero expectations that the various media won't do anything but continue to play their parts in manufacturing consent for their respective audiences. More Trump cheerleaders, more on the anti-Trump side who profit immensely by being the 24/7 anti-Trump network, and a few genuine, but ultimately tepid voices who kind of sort of maybe like Biden without it being about him 'not being Trump.'

I'm fairly convinced (50/50) that something major to change the election landscape will happen between now and either the election or inauguration and the US will be looking at a scenario they're not even thinking about now. I'm still too new here in ARG to have a strong opinion that goes past being a strong anti-fascist, but I'm pretty confident that the people here are resilient and no matter what is thrown at them, they'll quickly figure out a way to deal with it and get around whatever new obstacles are thrown up.

I found the interview informstive. I do not expect every question to be answered in one interview. This one lasted over half an hour and covered a lot of ground. As for how Milei would deal with Congress if he meets resistance, in other interviews he mentioned plebiscites. If elected Milei may be able to effect serious productive change or maybe not. At the very least he wants to get to the root of problems and not perpetuate a failing system. I believe in freedom of speech so I will listen to interviews and read reports wherever they appear - whether from the 'left', 'right' or wherever. I will make up my own mind. I do not need anyone filtering the information through preapproved 'credible' interviewers/writers. I will decide for myself who is credible or not.

Is there a transcript of the interview? I don't want to waste an hour of my life, nor do I need to see some for-show counting out of 100 Peso notes, but if there was something available to read, I could compare it to this: https://www.economist.com/news/2023/09/07/an-interview-with-javier-milei

BTW, @jbeas176, Rafael Correa didn't dollarize Ecuador, it was already done by the time he was elected. I understand he would have liked to undo dollarization, but it was so popular at the time, it would have brought down his presidency. Dollarization in Ecuador wasn't an obvious failure, nor was it a roaring success (Ecuador has had to go to the IMF quite recently for a loan). Having lived there I can say there are disadvantages, a built-in inflationary tendency due to a lack of small change and rounding up prices, the economy has been stagnant for years (basically since Correa left), and the banknotes must be exchanged each year with planeloads to and from the US.

I don't see where Freedom of Speech comes into this. Neither the ARG or US govt. restricted Milei or Carlson's speech (and as we all should know, Freedom of Speech as a legal concept can only be restricted by Govt., not private enterprise). Without going back and reading every post I'm pretty sure I didn't read anyone here suggesting that Milei or Carlson shouldn't be allowed to speak or conduct their interview. Sounds like hyperbole.

I don't find anything wrong with pointing out the credibility of politicians or those who interview them in order to speak to what their agenda's might be. If a politician or a TV talking head has a documented history of lying or lacking credibility I think it's good for that info to be transparent so people can take that into account when they're watching what they're being spoon fed. More information, not less. Sunshine is the ultimate disinfectant. Making credibility judgements about people is a basic everyday human life skill. Can I trust this guy trying to sell me his car? The mechanic says it's got some problems, but the seller says it's tip-top so why should I care what the mechanic says? Does this mechanic have a good reputation in the neighborhood, or is he going to try and rip me off? If I ask this lady to watch my bag while I go to the restroom for a minute, will she and my bag still be here when I get back? Is this witness giving sworn testimony credible or lying through his teeth? If you're not making credibility judgements about all the people involved who give you information (talking heads all the way up to Chairman of the Board of an International Media Conglomerate) then you're leaving it to others to do at least some of your thinking for you and only listening/believing to that which you want to believe and that which you are told. If the messenger truly didn't matter people wouldn't favor FOX or MSNBC and would rely on Reuters or the AP - yet they do watch FOX/MSNBC because the messenger matters to them as much, if not more, than the message and the messenger plays a large part in crafting the message.

As far as not needing anyone filtering the information through preapproved 'credible' interviewers/writers (Remember, it was FOX News that told the federal court Carlson wasn't credible - not the left. Just like all of the witnesses who've testified against Trump in the leadup to his many legal cases/"witch hunts" are all Republicans, not Democrats - go figure, they're eating their own), I wish I had a Ten Peso note for every time I heard Trump and his followers go on about "fake news" "fake media" "fake (fill in the blank)" - all blatant efforts to tell people what's not credible. That's where you can find the greatest effort to filter information, or more accurately, put a spin on it or just flat out lie at the same time it reaches the eyes and ears of the loyal base from other sources considered more credible.

According to this article, Google influences 25 % of worldwide elections. So maybe it is in their hands to decide who will be the next Argentine president.

This very highly paid interview was of course pre planned in advance with questions and answers . There was no off the cuff remarks just some clever marketing to create egoism in most argentinian people . There is much more to this canditate that meets the eye but so many superficial people today watch one interview of 34 minutes heavily promoted as the most watched and walla he is a superstar . When one studies in depth the history and connections of this canditate there is much more than meets the eye . I personally feel that things will get much worse under his presidency as his style and politics are very confrontational , You cannot just take away everyones right to free medicine healtcare and subsidies and expect no reactions . Buenos Aires will see the worst of it soon !

He's not going to be able to end free public hospitals but he might make some reforms. There is no reason that non resident foreigners, for example, should receive free treatrment. Britain had to put an end to that. Nor is there any justification for giving free university education to foireigners or non permanent residents. As for information about Milei's background and what does not "meet the eye", please keep us informed of articles and broadcasts to read and watch. Post the links on this website. I am sure many will want to learn more.
