EDIT: The reason you want indicator LEDs on your surge protector is so that you know whether it is still actively protecting your circuit.
If a surge protector takes a large surge through it then it needs to be replaced with a new one. If you don't have the indicating LEDs then the protector may still keep your circuit alive but it may not be actively 'protecting' you. They loose their ability to work properly after a higher voltage surge.

What does a surge protector look like? The ones below don't seem right. I've only ever bought power strips with surge protection built in, but I haven't seen that here, just the white one posted above.
