ejoct en argentina:
O.K.,,Please, let's not blow this out of proportion. It was not the U.S.A. gov't insulting Uruguay with whom it has very good relations but rather the organizers of this soccer match confusing the Chilean national anthem with the Uruguayan. It was in fact a gross error but, hardly,"imperdonable" as the annoncer says.
Much worse and considerably more "imperdonable" was a few years ago when an Argentine player called an Afro-Brazilian one a "macaco-- a monkey" and in Brazil itself for which he was duely fined.I almost could not believe it because as we all know, argentines are not racists.Or are they?

What would the reaction be if the Uruguayan sports authority played the Canadian national anthem before an event where the US team participated in Montevideo?

Probably similar, this seems to happen at least once in every international sporting event. Its a screw up but not really a diplomatic incident.

I think all Americans would lose sleep until a Scot in Argentina got offended on their behalf.

Right. Happens all the time. Kazakhstan had Borat's parody of its national anthem ("All other countries are run by little girls") played at an international event and it survived.
