In today's Clarin (8/29/'16) which as we all know is unabashedly pro Macri we read that US people are now "locos por la Argentina".
Tourism from that country is up 18% over 2015 to 200,000 in the first semester of this year almost equaling the 2008 record year of 227,000 . A big photo shot of Jennifer and Terri from Nebraska staying in my barrio of San Telmo to learn Spanish.Another of John and his wife from Texas who said,"It's great but a little more expensive then we had thought".All of them were just tickled that there was no more U$D 160 reciprocity fee .The average US tourist stays in a 4 or 5 star hotel and spends at least U$D 100 per day more than any other country according to the article..Well fine. This should all be good news for the restaurants mentioned in other posts on this forum.

Hi to all from a very hot Madrid!
As many of you know, I work in the tourism industry and depend on tourism for my living but I think it is not a prime time to come to Argentina! I tell all my friends( unless they are very close and stay with me) to wait.
Crime and violent crime is still rampant everywhere , prices are not a bargain and there are so many options elsewhere(although I love Argentina)
I hope very soon I can take these words back!

However, no evil yanquee dollars for the treasury. Blue is alive and well.

I think that there just might be some exaggeration in the Clarin's article.
I arrived at EZE frm JFK on 19 August. There were very few foreign passport holders at customs. I live in Recoleta and have seen very few American tourists. They can be spotted from afar. I've seen the hop on - hop off tourist buses on Cerrito with very few passengers. I think that most Americas would prefer to take their summer vacations at a beach or doing other summer activities than pack winter clothes to come to BA.

I work in tourism in Argentina. The high season for tourism doesn't really get going until October/November and runs through March, so even though it's up 18% so far this year the overall number is relatively low compared to the number of tourists during the high season which is probably why you don't see droves of Americans currently. Hopefully the growth continues during the high season!

The government is starting a promotion to discount the IVA tax for hotels for foreigners and eliminating the reciprocity fee helps. The major issue I hear from tourists is the surprisingly high cost of the city. Another personal opinion is that the local tourism industry is quite stagnant in its offerings and hasn't kept up with international travel trends. Mega tango shows, bus tours, mediocre parrillas, non-descript hotels, unpersonalized and bad service are the norm. Big opportunity if you are good at marketing a tourism business.
