Hi,

My brother-in-law is traveling to Argentina from Canada later this week and is planning on bringing US currency with him. He was told not to, that he couldn't get into the country with cash. Is this true?
He is only bringing like $2,500 tops.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Is not true, you can bring 10.000 usd as any country in the world if you bring more you have to declare it of course but that is in every country to. 2.500 is not problem at all hope him a good trip and lot of fun.

How long will he be visiting and what are his travel plans?

That cash might not be enough and I believe now it might be wiser to bring cash than use CC and get royally screwed by the official exchange rate.

Just saying.

Remind him not to get stuck with a bunch of worthless Ar$ currency when he heads home to Canada.

I am not sure if he is visiting you and what nationality you have but if you have problems getting dollars but have a bill abroad you can ask him to bring some dollars over from your own account.

If you want to save in dollars he might be willing to change it for you, depending on the relationship with him it can be anywhere between 4,6 and 6 peso for the dollar.

No, I also live in Canada but originally from Argentina. I travel there often and I've never had an issue entering with US cash. This comes about based on all the new restrictions regarding buying US currency. As lamarque said and I hope he is right, you can bring up to $10k without any issues.

You have no issues bringing money INTO the country. And you can bring whatever amount, you just legally have to declare anything over 10.000 USD. Anything below that doesn't need to be declared.

Everything above needs to be declared, but you are stupid to declare it.

You are better off painting a bullseye on your back
