What is going on here?

It seems like lately there are A LOT of threads that contain nothing more than (pseudo) intellectual bickering. Maybe I'm sometimes guilty of it too, but what is the point of baexpats supposed to be?

So many threads get hijacked by the usual suspects and become what seems like a classroom debate.

I know, I know . . . If I don't like it, don't read it. It just seems like there are a lot of people that are so bored that they sit around trying to sound smart by taking shots at one another.

Sorry, I'm just sitting at work waiting for the weekend.

The point is exactly what it is (I think!), a community for people who live here, a way to share and communicate with other people living in the same situation. It's a message board, not an encyclopedia. There's a lot of jibberjabber but some fantastic actual knowledge.

The way I've always imagined the site is it's as if we were all in a coffee shop somewhere, having already rounded up all the big squishy couches into one corner, drinking coffee and just hanging out. We talk about life, we share stories, and we gossip. Yes, we ask questions about where to find this or where did you get that and so on, but they're not isolated inquires awaiting succinct answers, they're part of an ongoing conversation between members of the group.

The group is big enough that there are always several conversations going on at once, sometimes one group of people will overhear something from another group and incorporate themselves in the conversation moving from the original topic over to something new. Sometimes people get up and leave, heading on to whatever they are doing next; others come and take their seats.

That's how I see it at least, just a big online cafe.


But then again, I'm still relatively new here so what do I know...

I didn't mean to sound as if I think the only acceptable use of this site is to get directions, etc.

But some posters here just go on and on and on forcing their opinion on everyone else. And these same people always have to have the last word. Eventually they resort to name calling. It just seems a little ridiculous.

Lately? What do you mean by "lately"?

You have been a member for 6 or 7 months and only noticed it recently?

Besides all the good postings, every now and then somebody needs to get a load off the chest, and some members are very stubborn (not you and me, of course ).

Married life has taught me, that when someone continues to force their opinion on me, I ignore it and stop - or else I would be doing the very same.
