What Is So Great About Miami?

What's funny is that none of them seem to really love Miami the city itself... they just need to check it off the list of where they've been. It's a status thing.

You hit the nail on the head there. It seems its the carribean thats the new status bar in our friends circles. Miami is getting too common, Dominican Republic is where its at :-/

status Miami?? if you live outside of the US maybe. I still have to find an American that thinks Miami is cool other than the beach. There is a saying in English that says "it is very Miami" which is truly not a good thing.

The best thing about Miami is its 'Brand', the way its portrayed around the world.
Miami's image had been "Heavens waiting room", referring to the seniors that went there to wait out their final years living cheaply and near beaches.
But once the Narcos arrived in the 70's and their lives were glamorously portrayed by Don Johnson in "Miami Vice" and Al Pacino in "Scarface", "Miami" became synonymous with a place where poor Latin Americans can quickly acquire Ferraris, mansions, Armani suits and girlfriends life Michelle Pfeiffer.
Today, just as "Silicon Valley" means place of technology, and "Hollywood" refers to the movie industry, "Miami" continues to mean night life, yachts, celebrities, parties, fast cars, flashy jewelry and most of all: opportunity for Latins to live the good life.

What is so great about Miami? If you live in Europe or the USA, not much.

However, if you live in BA, it is the shortest flight to the "first world". It means getting away from the noise, the horrible/non-existent customer service, screaming porteños. It means year-round good weather, stocking up on good quality clothing and driving in 6-lane highways with no mopeds, bikes, cartoneros, ugly trucks. It means you can get away from the chaos for a while.

Personally, I can't imaging choosing a destination just to go shopping (unless maybe you are looking for something only made in that place).

However, if Argentines love it and want to tell me all about it, more power to them. It's not like they are trying to tell me how great Tallahassee is. That I wouldn't stand for! :)

Why wouldn't the obvious shopping destination be Panama? From what I've been seeing in tourism posts, they offer "shopping" tours in the city. It's certainly closer, but perhaps not as cheap to fly to (crazy as it may seem); but the Spanish is a given there too.

That is a funny question. Back in 1995, when I was still living in Brazil, some friends suggested that we should travel as a group to Florida. I proposed Panama instead and almost got beaten. They said that if they wanted to see poverty, they rather stay in Brazil.

Typical South American mindset.

But we`re not talking about Americans, we`re talking about Argentinians!!
