Marmite and Vegemite are to Brits and Aussies what dulce de leche is to Argentines.

Update: Corn Tortillas are beating Maple Syrup by a margin of 5-1 which goes to show that a few Maple Syrup fanatics on this board totally distort the real needs of expats, which is: finding love, corn tortillas and pico de gallo - not necessarily in that order.

Ummm.... Quesadillas made with fried corn tortillas, cheese and pico de gallo....

There used to be a good Mexican-run restaurant in Córdoba, but it didn't last long. I think the closest good Mexican food is in Santiago (de Chile).

I don't know about the Maple Syrup skew - I think most of us who needed maple syrup found out how to get it down here. I know my procurement worries fall along other lines now.

On the other side of things - why concern yourself with food that's easy to make (corn tortillas and pico de gallo)? And love...well, I found it down here in Buenos Aires, but she came from Paraguay. It's all about knowing where to look :)

Maybe us Maple Syrup worriers have been here longer and we know already how to deal with the easy things ;)

"I love the smell of" maple syrup, with little islands of melting butter, drowning fluffy pancakes "in the morning..."

Why vote for pico de gallo when you can find the ingredients to make it in San Telmo, Palermo and Belgrano? I've yet to have to investigate other barrios but I have in the past seen cilantro and jalapeños being sold on the street in Once. Tomato, onion, cilantro, jalapeño, lime juice and salt are the only ingredients you need to make pico de gallo and it requires maybe 10 minutes max to prepare unless you're making a huge amount. Some people also add olive oil, but I find it unnecessary.

I voted corn tortillas since you can special order them for $$$$$ but I've never found the right flour here to make them. I've heard I need to go to the Bolivian market in Liniers (right?) but haven't ever gotten around to it. I can't believe GOOD CHEESE wasn't an option. I can make bomb tex-mex at home but the cheese here always knocks off some points.

I love Joe's polls.

El Queso: Yes Pico de Gallo is easy to make - but corn tortillas - tell us your secret!
