Why is my US debit card always charged as credit.

Hello everyone I hope this hasn’t been asked before I’ve tried searching for these questions but I haven’t found anything on here yet. Every time I use my US debit card it is always charged as credit which sucks because most places charge 10% extra. Cashiers are always surprised because the card clearly says debit. I know in the US debit cards can be ran as either Debit or Credit so I’m not sure if that is why or if it has to do with my bank specifically. Also at a lot of stores it gives me the option to pay in cuotas. Has anyone else had this experience? I’ve never actually tried it so I’m not sure if it would work but I know a couple times when I’ve ordered Rappi/Pedidosya I didn’t make sure I had enough in my checking account and the order still went through and I just paid later.
