Are there people in this group who are familiar with this wine region? If so, do you know of accommodations in this area too which you might suggest as enjoyable ones which you have also experienced? I am trying to figure out a driving route. I will pick up a car at the airport - Thought I would go to the Maipo Region first. If you can provide me with any assistance, it would be most appreciated. Thank You. Walter

The Colchagua valley, in and around the town of Santa Cruz, has the best services, both hotels and restaurants. The Museo de Colchagua is exceptional. The Maule valley, around the city of Talca, is also good, but lacks a comparable density of services. There are great national parks, and the route of the Andes to Malargüe is really interesting.

Below are some traditional vineyards worth visiting 1 to 3 hours from Santiago on Panamericana Sur , most representative of Valley of Maipo ans Colchagua

Not to be missed Don Melchor de Concha y Toro

Don Melchor

Don Melchor, Chile’s first ultra-premium wine, is the only one with 23 vintages to its credit, all prize-winning and renowned by world critics. Don Melchor is the maximum exponent of Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto, and places Chile as one of the world’s great producers of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Though north of Santiago, the Elqui Valley is an up and coming wine region worth checking out.

I appreciate the suggestions Tonight, I am in Talca, Chile.. Please provide specific suggestions where you think I should spend my time and perhaps also where I should hang my head too.. I am in a da hotels.com location this evening. nice room but perhaps the vineyards offer better services with same star levels.. thanks walter

Viña Balduzzi in San Javier, just south of Talca, has really nice tours. Tabontinaja, to the southwest, is also very nice. East of Talca, Viña Corral Victoria has a nice restaurant. For accommodations, I recommend Casa Chueca (www.trekkingchile.com), just outside Talca. Also, take the narrow gauge train to Constitución, but take the bus back (It's faster).

For the best wines, you should drive east until you reach a wine-producing region in Argentina.

Barring that, Montes Alpha is one of Chile's best producers, and Los Vascos is the Rothschild family's holding in Chile, also excellent.
