I am trying to use Xoom in Mar Del Plata. They have my money but the 3 Xoom money pickup points are "not functioning".

Has anyone in BA used Xoom in the last 24 hours? Were you sucessful. Please let me know where you picked up your money so I can go there Monday morning when I am back in town.

Thanks

I did the online setup on 12/29 and picked up the pesos on 1/3 in La Plata. I too was in their store for 10 minutes to complete the transaction.

The reason Xoom is requiring more paperwork is that when the Xoom offices are raided, the police will used this as evidence to fine Black Marketeers 3x the amount of their transactions for using the Black Market. This is also why the border checks for visa overstays have become non-routine. Migraciones is working with AFIP on a sophisticated computer system to catch Black Marketeers at the border. Those with insufficient cash to pay the hefty fine will be cooling their heals in one of Argentina's finest institutions...

In addition sometime this year all electronics must be registered on your custom's form on entry and leave with you when you exit the country (after paying your Xoom related fines).

Joe's right, AFIP and Migraciones have been recruiting the finest minds from PhD informatics programs worldwide to create a sophisticated new device - the so-called "com-puter" - a blazingly fast electronic abacus - which will be able to process hundreds of bits of data per second, rapidly calculating estimated fines for black market profiteers, defined as 3x the rate of profit on the exchange (using constantly shifting, ad-hoc figures). Immoral extranjeros who are unable to pay the fees will be sent to Argentina's largest penitentiary, the dreaded "UBA", to ponder their crimes for the rest of their days.

Also, as Joe stated, in this coming year all electronics will need to be registered on your customs form when you enter Argentina, and left at the border with customs officials when you exit the country, assuming your obligatory exit-petition to AFIP is granted and you have the necessary exit-permits in your passport.

Here's an update. The system is up and still no money even though Xoom sent me an email saying the money is in. One place says there is a hold on it. Went to another place and they are closed and went to the 3rd address (all of this in Mar Del Plata) and it is a market with maybe 50 shops (butchers, veggies, clothes, etc) and 1 Pagos booth with a line up of 40 people. She has never heard of Xoom. So, hopefully Monday morning in BA I can get my money.

Perhaps one can obtain "transit papers" ala Casablanca to avoid detention at the border.
